No, they proved that it is very hard to take and hold land there. Destroying all the works of man, killing all the live stock, jamming all radio and TV broadcasts and shooting down any aircraft that enter the area could all be done without setting foot on the ground or trying to hold a city.

It doesn't need to be covert. Good old police work was what got the plot in England.

Funding a few schools and water pumps etc could help to give people counter evidence to what they are being told. Perhaps even using some competent people in the rebuilding effort in Iraq could have prevented the mess we see today.

You have overlooked the explanation that the result is a success for what they really wanted to happen. You could have suggested that actually catching OBL would have ended much of the concern with security and thus put at risk the republican re-election. You also missed the chance to point out that by keeping Iraq's oil off the market, GWB's buddies in the oil business have been able to raise the price of oil.
