The Taliban is not completely discredited, has formed back up and is slowly beginning to control areas. The folks just inside the Pakistan border are sympathetic to the Taliban. Basically this is a festering wound on the country.

The Soviets proved fighting in Afghanistan is a total waste of time and manpower. I am not sure why we even bothered. They will never become a western democracy. I know we don't like to talk about it but covert operations, identification and termination may be the only effective way to deal with terrorists. If they are not going to come out and line up in the field for battle conventional military force is useless, unless you just want to kill them all and let god sort them out.
