I was opposed to the invasion of Iraq. I have no degree in history (which Dubya does have) but I remember the British getting brutally licked in their attempted invasion and the Russians getting the same more recently. When the operation was a success I was flabbergasted. The US now had an opportunity to turn Afghanistan into a true model of democracy and peace and make it a shining example to all. They had enough troops to hold it and by setting to work building good but inexpensive and earthquake proof concrete schools, police stations and medical clinics in every reasonable village they could have shown us all a great example. Instead, like a school boy tired of torturing one small creature they wandered off to find another. What a waste. What a disgrace.

The white house was started in 1792 as the residence of the president, nobody "owned" it before the revolution.

The drug war is perhaps the stupidest thing the US has done, exceeding Iraq in cost and a lot more deadly for Americans. Most of our murders are drug dealer related. We have over a million in jail at $50,000 a year for non-violent drug "crimes" and niether party will even look at stopping the war.

Sorry I went to high school at 1736 G street (the road that would go right through the middle of 1600 Pennsylvania avenue if the EOB, Treasury and White House wasn't there). I am fairly familiar with the place and I have taken the tour many times. I used to have a crush on Jackie when I was a kid and I went there a lot hoping to see her. Did too. That was before a lot of security took over. You just showed up and went on the tour. Sometimes there were only a couple people there. Never knew who would walk by and say hi.
