Jaycar seems expensive compared to Maplin

A recent copy of EPE in England came with a free Jaycar catalogue. The Jaycar prices often seem quite a bit higher than Maplin's for equivalent products. For instance, the Press 'n' Peel pack of 5 sheets is around =A312 from Maplin, but around =A334 from Jaycar. And there was an etchant tank that appeared to be identical to the Maplin one, yet a lot more expensive. These are by far not the only items that caught my eye whilst perusing the Jaycar catalogue. Maybe the Ozzies don't have any alternative outlets down under? Dunno why anyone in Europe would order stuff across such a distance, anyway.

I think you got both salient points there. :-) I can't understand why they advertise over there if it's mail order from over here.

Cheers.

MM, 60% of my sales are overseas. Here is what some of my recent UK customers said:

21-Jul-2005 Brian Warburton, Turbo Systems Consultants Limited UK Hi, just a quick note to thank you for your prompt dispatch of the copy of PicBasic Pro I recently ordered. It has arrived as expected and at a price 20% lower than I could have got it for in the UK, the enclosed SimmSticks look interesting as well ! Thanks very much, Brian. 23-Sep-2004 Chris Hardy London United Kingdom Great customer service and a great price. (The UK distributor wanted about twice as much!) Chris 25-Jan-2004 Romilly Cocking Cocking and Co. Ltd. London England My order arrived in the UK yesterday, 5 days after I placed it. Superb service. Thanks very much. 2-Dec-2003 Robert Crooks Leicestershire UK Hi there, Thanks for the prompt way that you have dealt with my order, I got the thing ordered and registered in 5 hours total. Brian, me ole mucker, I have the catalogue open right now, on my desk, page 188: Press 'n' Peel Film, Quantity 1, =A334.95

Note the =A3=A3=A3=A3=A3=A3=A3 sign! Here, hang about, I'll put my glasses = on. Yep, it's STILL a =A3=A3=A3=A3=A3=A3=A3=A3=A3 sign! Wait a mo, here's my jeweller's loupe (this would magnify the smallest ant to make it look as big as an elephant). Sorry, IT'S STILL a =A3=A3=A3=A3=A3=A3 sign!

(Just thought I'd make this clear...)

In Australia the product sells for AUD $34.95, which is significantly lower than 34 pommie quid. Sorry my keyboard doesn't have that strange currency symbol and I ain't looking up the ASCII code for it either. :P

However Maplin's price at GBP12 is roughly AUD $28 which makes their product cheaper even if the price is a misprint.

Some sort of mixup there - my Jaycar catalogue (p188) lists those PressnPeel for A$34.95 - looks like someone forgot to change the price to funnymoney for the Brits

How about listing a few more prices at random - just for interest sake

David - who wonders why they (apparently) printed a version for England

The plot thickens...

The Maplin web site gives me a price of GBP14.99, and

says GBP10.75. Andy Wood snipped-for-privacy@trap.ozemail.com.au

Sounds like someone was told to change the Dollars to Pounds and did just that without doing the actual conversion (ie changed the Dollar signs to Pound signs only)!

It's a question of horses for courses. It's unusual for one supplier to be the best for everything, so shop around. When I was looking for a particular Czech made PIC programmer, I found it cheaper from Kanda in the UK than from either the manufacturers or their local agents.
