Nice tool for monitoring your internet with Raspberry Pi

...mind telling us why this is significantly better than the Samknows or something I can knock up in an hour or two from bash scripts and some Perl?

I notice that scrolling down far enough on the come-on page shows that the data this monitor intercepts gets fed to a Google App Engine and that this service will be 'supported by advertising'.

From the blurb its only measuring upload speed, download speed and ping latency, which an RPI should be easily capable of doing as a standalone device, but noooo, this thing sends undefined parts of your data stream to a Google App Engine. Why?

My suspicious mind tells me that this is yet another underhanded way to pass personal data to advertisers, probably disguised within the uploads whose speed they claim to be measuring. Remember BT and Phorm?

It might be interesting to try it alongside a copy of Wireshark running in promiscuous mode.

In summary, I see no good reason to:

- let a Google App Engine see any part of my private internet traffic

- let DomainsByProxy (who registered the internetconnectivitymonitor.net domain on 9Dec2013) monitor my network traffic and pass details to some unidentified advertiser

- *OR* pay for the surveillance device (the RPi it runs on).

I already track ping latency, thanks very much, and do it with a simple bash script to generate the data and a Perl logwatch module to analyse it. If I ever need to measure upload and download speeds as well, I can do it the same way without using a dedicated RPi or subsidising an unknown advertiser.
