Buy a modem with a datapump.

Several people have already specified the models that use datapumps.

A datapump is a 90MHz 8 bit processor that executes a DSP algorithm. It filters the 4KHz phone signal into frequency buckets. Very similar to how ADSL uses buckets too. By using buckets, frequencies where transmission isn't working very well, can be partially avoided.

The same algorithm can be executed on a host processor, as in the winmodem case. It should be easy for Linux to do this. And mainly a matter of accessing the ADC and moving bytes from it, to the memory area where the DSP action will be carried out.

Winmodems can actually *exceed* a Courier or Sportster at thruput, by around 1% or so. It used to be the opinion, that a DSP algo carried out on a host CPU was no match for a datapump. Today, the host DSP code is actually slightly better than the datapump firmware.

There are other ways of digitally interworking with FAX (mail to FAX gateway), but the old way (use a modem) allows the user to control every aspect of the job.

It may look that way, but all you have is a snippet of (thermal) paper with letters on it. Fax is the only thing I can fake totally and convincingly. I have done so several times in the past.

In all cases I got a complaint, that my fax was not signed. Huh? What? Since when has does the photocopy of a signature carry any legal weight?

So what I did was resend the fax, "signing" it and for good measure had my "signature" confirmed as genuine by the countersignatures of the branch manager and my peronal adviser. To make quite sure everything was absolutely genuine and not faked in any way I did not send that fax from home but "sent" it from a fax machine in the branch itself.

So yes, you do get a report that the transmission was successful. You can NOT be sure the result is legible, only that the machine was not able to detect the problem with its printer. And you have no reliable proof whatsoever. That courts and judges may treat it as such should make you very careful and perhaps stop recieving faxes altogether.

So as a control for yourself with doubtful legal value as real proof you can also request delivery and read receipts for your email. They serve the same purpose just as well.

On the other hand lawyers may be ignorant and illiterate idiots, but they do have power. So maybe you are right and it does pay to cater to their whims, however worthless and ill advised they may be.

You have to remember *when* it was invented. You can say only so much on the phone. A very rough hand-drawn sketch can be worth a million words. I only used fax after I already had email, but it was invented and available long before. Proof reading drafts and looking at typographic layout can be very valuable too. My first scanner was a modified flat-bed scanner. I now consider fax to be totally obsolete (except for small children) but that was not the case when it was first invented.

I read somewhere that fax machines are (were?) very popular in Japan. Chinese writing does not lend itself to a keyboard, hand writing is much quicker and easier for most.

That's not necessarry at all. You can receive and read faxes without printing them. Until April of 2019 I was running an old BBS with a ZyXEL Elite 2864L V34 Class 2 Fax modem. Unluckily both serial ports died of that machine ;-(. I am now UniCorn BBS running at a Pi 1B with only !ROSBink 1.30.

The software was/is FrontDoor 2.02nc, RemoteAccess 1.11 and ZFax 2.23 and more. The difference between a Modem Call and a Fax Call was detected by the modem, giving another connect string. FrontDoor detected that by giving a different ErrorLevel on with my UniCorn.BAT file at the Dos 5 machine served the ZFax program to receive the fax correctly. After that a message to the sysop was given. After reading it by the ZFax program I could export it to a graphics file in the *.PCX format and print that at my Acorn RiscPC if wished to do so.

Under M$ Dos there is als BGFax for other (not ZyXEL) modems.

For outgoing faxes I used my ordinary RISC OS DTP program Impression Publischer+, ArcFax printerdriver and the application !ArcFax in combination with a E-Tech Bullet E56RVP+ V34 Fax Class 2 momdem at V21ch2, V27Ter, V29 and V17. Fax uses the very robust Group3 Tonal T30 Modified Huffman protcool for data encoding at Synchone HDLC HalfDuplex modem speeds, with was very popular at bad quality phone lines, expecially in the third world, i.e. Africa, India, South America etc. That's why Fax was used for a very long time world wide.

The last one was received a long time ago, the last one sent the same ;-). But it is still possible here.

Almost every analogue V32Bis/V34/V90/V92 modem that also uses Fax Class 2, at V21Ch2 (300 bps), V27Ter (4800 bps), V29 (9600 bps) and V17 (14400 bps), alongside all the asynchronous bautrates.

Note: Baudrate (symbol rate) is not the same as bitrate!
