Hello all, iam new to embedded linux. i would like to create a embedded linux development platform on a x86 host(open source). as a initial state i would like to create applications for x86 targets then extend the same platform for ARM . can anyone suggest me how to go about this procedure. any books or online documentation i can refer?

Sure. This is called cross-compiling. It's easy once you get used to it. The gnu autoconf documentation talks about this a bit. Read Karim's book, or maybe download and use PTXdist.
