meaning of "field-programmable" in FPGA

hi,



what is the definition of the term "Field-programmble" inside "FPGA"? It could be:



  1. programable in the field (on application sites) or

2."electrically programable" in contrast to "mask programmble" any literature to the the definition of the term "field-programmble" is welcome.

Either - it just means programmable after manufacture, as opposed to masked.

As far as I remember, at the start, Xilinx called them just PGA (no F).
