I often run more than one X server. Ctrl-Alt-F2 gives a new login screen Log in as another user (usually root if I'm logged in as non-root, and I want to do a few root jobs. Then startx -- :1, and up comes a second GUI. Switch between user + root Gui with Ctrl-alt-F7 or F8. Up to 6 different user IDs on one console. Memory can get a bit tight, though.

How about the phone number? I suppose you could clone that (the bad guys are always doing it on the TeeVee) but credit card companies use it now for activation.

It's not about ATM's. That's a more "physical" transaction where you actually have to show up at a bank or other ATM location with your card.

It's about money transfers and online purchases. In Europe you normally initiate such payments from your bank account and the TAN provides a high level of security.

Very different here. The "new" enemy has two faces: One is the hacker in Trojanistan who crams trojans into computers. The other is the common criminal stealing physical stuff in hopes to net enough quick dough for the next drug fix.

The hacker in Trojanistan will not have your TAN list. The burglar will not know you log-in data so won't get much money for this info. The result is that neither can fleece your account. Without a TAN the guy in Trojanistan can, and usually will.

Duh. Win9x reached EoL July 11, 2006. ...and M$ stopped **actually** patching the W98 kernel when they released XP (in 2001). ...and M$ moved up the EoL date[1] when a critical security flaw was revealed which M$ simply didn't feel like fixing.

Running Win9x in 2011 (almost 2012 now) is just nuts. ...and using an OS that is always running as root is insane.

It reduces the phone company's profits on all the calls the thief would make on your phone. The worst part is that the phone company actually knows where your phone is, but won't provide you with that information to help you retrieve it.

When speaking of Win9x, an apt modification to your analogy would be that your gas cap was lost in 2006 and there is no replacement (M$, the manufacture doesn't bother to make them any more) and anywhere you park, anyone can dump sugar water into your gas tank.

The necessity of the *permissions* thing was known by OS designers long before August 1981, when MICROS~1 released its first OS.

Pffff. I'm betting all these Win9x users still have AutoRun enabled. ...along with the majority of Windoze users (then wondering why they get pwned).

Ha Well, I can't argue with that, you pretty much have covered the careless computer user and over depending on MS to save their asses.

As for the corvette, I just wish I owned one of those! :)
