10Mb/s over a 10Mb/s link. You probably still do. You probably think that you get 100Mb/s over your 100Mb/s ENET link. You do not.

It isn't the speed of the transistor that matters. They DO have VERY fast articles. The hard thing to do is make one that will push transmitter power levels at high rates. That plateau is quite a bit slower than these exotic developmental devices. Just look how long it took them to finally get somewhat reliable Blue spectrum laser diodes made so they could give us higher res DVD form factors.

The bottleneck device is what bottlenecks the entire communications industry. Those devices are usually those which need to perform at high power levels and remain stable for vast periods of time. The blue spectrum burning lasers were hard to make well too.

The lower power stuff that works with the actual data and waveform generation are usually faster and ahead of the high power link hardware.

That is why you see 10G base local traffic handling (especially with modern 'acceleration'), and slower single Gb channels in the actual WAN links.
