Today we got sleet and snow and temperatures below freezing.
Last year I put roll-up vinyl curtains around the patio and bought a couple of 1500 watt space heaters in order to try to keep the environment in the patio less than lethal for my plants. So far so good. I have a Ficus grown from stems which survived last winter after having earlier been in the house for six years or so, (and hating it) and it's doing well.
I also have a Madagascar Palm which has dropped all of its leaves and has been brought indoors until spring and a Ylang Ylang which has done the same.
The Ylang Ylang is interesting in that two years ago I left it out too long and its leaves died after I brought it indoors, but after putting it out in Spring, everything grew back. A miracle.
Last year I left it out again, but the cold snap was vicious and froze the stems which died back to the roots.
Again, when Spring came and I watered what I thought was hopeless, I got two new trunks which came up out of the dirt and made a lot of leaves. A major miracle, I think.
This winter the leaves have all dropped off again and I have two stems which are waiting for Spring...
