Weather in Austin

We've had no sleet, just a tiny bit of rain, but nasty winds that drop the chill factor painfully. So the citrus, lime tree in particular, are struggling.

My "freeze protect" on the swimming pool has come on every night for more than a week now.

We had major plumbing bursts at the retirement home in town and all people had to be evacuated. Hasn't happened ever before.

Wood usage: Started with about 2 cords in 2000, now up to 4 cords and it looks like even that won't be enough. Thinking about getting 5-6 cords for next season.

Oh, and our whole pool froze and the sweep hose snapped into pieces :-(

I wonder if there was snow in parts of the US where there never had been and if so what a traffic mess did it cause (here snow is regular, as is the traffic mess with or without it, but the stupidity of the drivers here is another issue :-)

Same thing in Germany. But meteoroligists (rightfully, of course) say that this exceptionally mild winter is just that: and exceptionally mild winter. Jim Thompson knows perfectly well that the "leftist weenies" claim no more than a few degrees rise in average temperature over decades; he also knows perfectly well that such rises (man-made or not) result in changes of ocean currents and other major climate-controlling factors and may therefore influence the *local* climate (a.k.a weather) in many different ways.

He knows all that but is playing dumbshit by saying "It's getting colder in my backyard so global warming must be a myth".

Well, there are old farts that are leftist weenies. Lots of them. You just have to know where to look. Universities are full of them. Gated communities are not. They tend to live in blue states not red. It is always a little too easy to look out the window and think that the rest of world is the same as what we see around us.

Here in the frozen waste lands of Minnesota, winters have ceased to be an interesting event. In the mid 60's we had snow levels that are still record setting. IIRC, in the winter of 62, we had 3 weeks where the temperature never got above zero. All that is in the realm of legend now. Yesterday was the second time this winter that the temperatures got below zero. Last year we had maybe 4. Otherwise, we have be basking in 30- 40 degree temps the last 5 years. Total snowfall so far is only 4 inches. Nomally we would have about 25 of our normal winter total of 55 inches. December was the warmest on record. Outdoor ice rinks are at a constant risk of melting. Wimpy winter weather.

Our weather rides in from the Northwest Canada. Local weather forecasts here show the top tier of the US states and most of Canada. There are few sub zero temperatures to the North. Even in Arctic.

Long term trend or short term trend, the effects are noticible. Plant and animal species have modified their normal ranges by several hundred miles. We now see Possum, which was runheard of 10 years ago.

People make fun of Al Gore - especially that part about inventing the Internet. What people forget is that he was an accomplished computer scientist in his early days. They even named his greatest achievement after him. Surely you have heard of Al-gor-ithms?
