Brainerd has lots to do in the winter - cross-country skiing probably is the most fun, but there's also ice-fishing and winter camping. A few years ago I spent a February weekend camping in Crow Wing State Park (about 10 miles downriver from Brainerd). It warmed up to 10 or 12 F each day, and cooled down to -24 F at night. Fun!

The Gull Lake ice fishing contest is usually this next weekend. But instead of -20 highs, they have had some +38 days recently. Of course, I wouldn't even think of saying 58 degrees above seasonal raises the global warming question to this readership. This last big front this week did bring some below zero weather. It was -13 two mornings ago. The sheriff says that ice should get 1" / day thicker in this weather. Today the paper had a front page with him watching someone with an ice auger on the lake. They measured 15 3/4" and need 16" to hold the event.
They report that they usually have 25,000 contestants on the ice, and the ice sinks more than 12" from the additional weight. My Texas sensibility tells me to drink hot chocolate on the shore and keep my camera ready.
The puny Mississippi has rocks sticking out all the way across. I think I could have waded across before the freeze, its really dry here. The level is 6 or 8' below the vegitation line on the bank. I keep going to see if it will freeze solid. There is ice all the way across, but there are open holes 5 or 10' across also.
The snow doesn't hide the grass. There are a lot of snowmobile trails, and lots of snowmobiles for sale cheap, only no snow. Well, it would count as the snowfall of the century in Austin, but the locals just wrinkle their nose at it.
