Sorry, Rui, I replied elsewhere. There are no 'official' statistics. You don't realize how the scientific community actually functions. The grant commitees, and other committees like the fellowship, scholarship, and other resource allocation committees get to decide what research is considered 'valid.' A proposal doesn't say "I want to prove/disprove AGW!" Instead, it will say something like "I want to examine the XYZ data set, and compare it to model ABC to see if corresponds to the conclusions in D's paper on historical trends in temperature change." Since the commitee will know the data set, the model, and the paper, they will know what results the research is expecting. Sure, it is POSSIBLE that they will have a negative or unexpected result. They might even publish it. Once! They would then switch fields of study...

You probably don't believe me. That's fine. I was watching in the wings in the mid-90s when sea change happened, and AGW became the new way to control the masses epsoused by academia. I saw the students and professors who changed from Earth System Science to Environmental Studies, or Biology, or whatever, because they had been black balled for too much honesty. I saw (and talked to!) the students who stayed in, but shifted the results of their research to somehow match the expected outcomes. If AGW was science, it would have been junked long ago. It's not.

Well, actually, they are more worried about earthquakes since the existing line goes along the main line of the San Andreas, and their 'alternative' goes along the more active faults associated with it!

But, they also insisted on making it as ugly and intrusive as possible. Instead of running it along the base of hillsides and valleys, they instead put it along the tops of ridges. Instead of taking a direct, shortest route, they decided to run it miles farther next to existing homes, probably to prevent having to buy any right of way, but to keep it more on public lands. They didn't care. After all, they were LA and they had more political power than we did, right!

What part of paying monthly fees (sometimes disguised as taxes) do you not understand as the user directly paying for what is used. Sure it is _common_ infrastructure, but it has a particular, often private, owner whom i make payments to for its use. Most utilities in the US are privately owned; as are many, perhaps a majority, of hospitals are privately owned. Do you see the distinction on ownership now?

Household solar is not infrastructure, it is a political gimmick. Not that it does not help with many *useful* things, like politicians careers.

The electric consumption of a normal refrigerator depends of the heat entering through the walls, how often the door is open, how the door is orientated and how much new warm food is daily entered into the refrigerator.

The obvious thing is to improve the wall and door insulation, reduce the heat losses when the door is opened and only insert pre-cooled (at the store etc.) stuff into the refrigerator.

For PV powered systems, it would make sense to make ice (or some very cold fluid) during the day, which will then melt during the night, sucking up the heat entering the box.

Instead of storing electricity for the night, there are several other alternatives to keep the food cold.

Absorption refrigerators are still used e.g. in travel trailers typically powered by propane cylinder. The absorption refrigerator only needs a heat source but no electricity.

The evacuated tube collector will produce sufficient temperatures to run the process. The heat can be stored in an insulated tank for the night.

The average temperature immediately below ground is quite constant and at least at higher latitudes, the cellar may have suitable temperatures for some kind of food and thus no need to store it in a fridge.

Use a whole lot of Dove dishwashing liquid too. It's great on solar panels.

Not too bad, it follows similar design problems to the inverter side. What can be annoying is the control. 2, 3 and 4 phase circuits reduce supply and output ripple, and are advertised starting at only 200W. It seems absurd to build one discrete, but then you rely on an IC, which though usually well enough documented to use, just doesn't tell you anything about what's inside it. I've already used one chip that just never quite behaved.

Sure, just don't turn it up that far, or set the controls to stay below that level. If you go over, the breaker cooks off and you reset it.

Nonetheless, do you actually believe that a single person going up on a wet roof with a hose will demonstrate that cleaning solar panels is a far more dangerous activity than coal mining and offshore rig roughnecking?

First of all, I noticed you tried to play a small strawman. The thing is, the subject wasn't focused on household solar but solar power in general. I direct you to Jim Yanik's post, the one that started this discussion, where he explicitly referred to companies developing solar plants.

Yet, as it was a pretty weak strawman it doesn't really matter, as everything still applies. So, going back to your claim, I see you aren't familiar with the meaning of the word "infrastructure". Let's see what it means, shall we?

So, let's considering your strawman move to try to divert the discussion from solar energy in general, including solar plants, to a very specific and limited application of that technology: household solar. First, let's picture the scenario that the homes served by household solar are completely isolated and independent from the power grid. Do you believe that independent power generators aren't a basic feature of a power system that serves an area? And moving away from that scenario back to the most common role for solar, which is a complementary role for the service provided by a power company. In that case it's also common for the power company to purchase from the home owners the excess power produced by their solar generators. That means that the service area covered by the power plant is also served with the energy generated from those solar generators.

Oh, I see, you are unable to make a case. Do you see why trying to play the authority card doesn't work? No matter how much of an impressive big shot you try to claim to be, we are still dealing with facts. And the odd thing about facts is that they are perfectly independent of any attempt at pulling the appeal to authority fallacy. You either base your claims on them or you spew nonsense by making up your claims. And if you are unable to base your claims on facts, guess where you fit in?

You seem to be confused. You just claimed that paying taxes constitutes "directly paying for what is used".

How many of those private utilities were founded based on your government's grants and subsidies? Recently the US government announced a $8.3 billion loan to a private company for it to build nuclear power plants.

What is medicaid and medicare?

You seem to be confused. The ownership of a company that provides a service has absolutely nothing to do with the ability to receive public funding and provide public services. It's very common for private companies to receive public funding in order to provide a public service. In fact, in some countries that is supposed to be seen as the right thing to do, instead of having a government implement a public service on it's own.
