Oh, to have a nice, cool pool like that. I don't have a working thermometer out there, but I suspect mine is more like 102...

Should be not really far off, though it is from a bit higher elevation.

The factiod that amazes me is that they sell in southern Georgia and Alabama.

Too much moisture in the air inside? Don't the Home Depots use swamp coolers?

What some people out here do is run the solar pool heater tubes at night. Supposely cools it off nicely.

in AZ i prefer the evap cooler to AC, not just because of the energy usage, but beacuse of the added humidity.. It is TOO dry to start with and a conventional AC makes it even dryer. The swap cooler makes it nace and cool and a little damp in your house, and you can leave the windows open so cooking heat smokle etc and shower fog is pushed right out.

If you are in a dry climate, an evap cooler is a good thing.

Add a bleed kit and you don't have to flush it or change the pads as often..

I used a swamp cooler in my apartment for 5 years. I serviced it myself, but maybe just a couple times needed. Worked very good except when it crept over 105 degrees. In 117 heat all you could do is strip down to undies.

Anybody using misters on their Refergerated air ?

Rheem A/C units used to advertise using an evaporative cooler to cool the condenser.

I don't know if anyone does that now.

Might be a corrosion issue. ...Jim Thompson

I have seen old commercial units that just tricked water down the coils. I guess its still an issue. There was one device advertised to attach garden hose and air valve to make it work.

I constantly see condensors mounted on the afternoon sunny side. Not only does the unit act like a big window reducing heat, its picking up the heat from the sunny walls. Brick will gather a lot of heat, and it really cuts down on performance. Late afternoon is also the peak load for the house.

I made a new deck and the deck sidewalk is 36 inches above unit. Code is 36 inches, but I made a deflector to shoot the air off the top away from that obstruction. greg

How did you make that deflector? Round duct type from sheet metal? We have the same problem, unit sitting under a deck, not the most efficient setting.

Beats me why they don't have water spray. I mean, if scale, chlorine or whatever is a concern, filters have been invented and are cheap. In the HVAC word it's just like with pellet stoves. Lots of things are rather, ahem, "retro" :-)

Joerg, Don't you have an AC/heating sheet metal shop near you? Here they're about as prevalent as scrap yards. Walk in and stroll thru the ductwork "fittings" and pick what you want, or have a custom piece made. Deflectors are standard items, BTW ;-)

It'll make your job a lot easier. ...Jim Thompson

Oh, that would be no problem. If making it takes more than 1h I'll have it made. The next shop is about 1/2h from here. Just wanted to know what kind of shape Greg used. It always struck me as weird why they put the A/C under the deck. Can't be moved though because it also contains the heater and is friggin' heavy. It was there when we bought the house and obviously they had to cut deck supports and re-attach them to get it in there.

I have tried this, to little effect. Of course, my solar heater is off line right now. It sprang a leak, and I haven't had time to find and fix it... :-(

Corrosion and contaminants. The minerals in the water slowly build up and coat the coils, insulating them and eventually blocking airflow. I saw one condenser that literally vibrated the deposits off...

I went to The Home Depot to get rug runner, clear. The Home Depot does not sell rug runner anymore, I guess they don't have room I went to local hardware, got clear runner, and basically made the deflector cutting it up and taping it together 3/4 around the top making a U channel. Works well until tape come off. The upper part is screwed to the deck. I got clear, thought it would look better. The stuff is still expensive. Some day Maybe some clear plexiglass ??

I have that problem. My compressor is on the west side. The plans had shown it mounted on the north side, but there wasn't enough room to fit it in there and maintain clearances. I have considered literally building a sun shade for it, but my wife is afraid of running into it!

I did install the deck after air was installed. It could be moved out a few inches by me, but current solution is working. The lower part goes in back and sides, angling up and getting smaller at the top, where only the back part remains. Shoots the air out pretty good.

"sprang" ?:-)

I've tried it, but our night-time temperatures are often 90+°F

Running the aerator is very effective, at least here, where the humidity is generally pretty low... right now it's 99°F and 26% humidity... almost as high as it ever gets. ...Jim Thompson

I have a solar blanket that some nights, like last night, I just roll up, and then roll it back out in the morning. You can't leave it rolled up in the day, it will burst the bubbles. The problem is that, if you get much wind, you get lots of dirt and sand in the pool.

Of course, the next morning, I have to add water for the 1 inch that evaporated in the night...
