NYC Canal Street Adventures

I thought "Canal Street" was in the "Chinese Quarter" ? Got a nice fake Ferrari sweat shirt last time I was there. Very cheap !

Many years ago.... I bought my first O-Scope there. It was a "Paco", I don't remember what it cost, couldn't have been much it was really old then!

Maybe where you bought the generator wasn't on Canal street but farther downtown. WTC is not on Canal Street. But I guess fifty years is a long time to remember exactly what street you bought something on. It's a good story anyway. People like hearing about memories like that. The Canal Street electronics surplus bazaar died for various reasons, economic, cultural, you name it.

Used to live in suburbs (Westchester). went down to Canal St when I was in my teens (I'm 50+). Did not drive, so took bus to No Bronx, picked up subway, went downtown. Found an old boatanchor receiver (Hallicrafter I believe): must have weighed 50 lbs. Took it back home: subway to No. Bronx and bus from there. Don't even recall getting a smart alack remark. Sweet receiver. Wish I'd kept it.

Me too. Take the bus to Van Cortland station then down to Canal St. We'd even go to the beaches at Rockaway - that was a long subway trip.

I bought odds and ends at radio row - switches, gears, pots, boards loaded with transistors (transistors were too expensive otherwise).

I was there about ten years ago - world trade center was still standing and not on canal street, walking distance from Fulton Fish Market and the wharves.

Most of it was taken up by "China Town" lots of stores/stalls selling CDs, cheap knock offs, a large "discount" computer store, pressed duck in delicatessen windows (if that isn't a cultural clash).

There was still one old holdout. It looked like the stock he had was from the 50's. I lusted after some brass wave guides and drank in that fine aroma of phenol varnish that used to permeate electronics in the 50's.

My OM pointed out a building and said it was were Lafayette Electronics got its start.

The good old days. Now for a hit of phenolic varnish I have to go out to the memorial battleship's radio room.

I admit that "Radio Row" was mostly at Cortlandt St. and that is where the WTC was built. I just did not remember the street name; as a 15 yr old, I knew where to go, but not the street names. If you looked at my post on the binary site, you would see the item that has Kranz Electronics imprinted on it is clearly marked with a Canal Street address.

Hey don't fret about it. I'm in the UK and I only know Canal St because I spent three weeks on holiday in NY. I really enjoyed the "Labour Day" celebrations in Little Italy and all the shops and bazars on Canal St.

Did you go up to the Armstrong FM tower? When I was a kid I lived in Yonkers on Nodine Hill just across from the palisades and the tower.
