AFIUI (and I've never actually handled one), auto-iris CCTV lenses use a galvanometric arrangement where the iris steady-state position is determined by the force of a coil operating against a spring (Hooke's law and ampere-turns).
There's typically another coil that provides a velocity signal for damping the control system.
The drive coil is something like 180 ohms so a bit more than 20mA and
4V drives it all the way (open, I would assume, since old-school vidicons could be easily damaged by high light levels).--sp
