Not sure a Porsche could make the turns. I've tried navigating it at night, and it reminds me of the phrase "a maze of twisty passgae, all alike".

I'll pass it along, but you know how software people get when they have "something that works".

When Bruce described it to me, it sounded like it would either not work or be so much slower than, say, strapping CDs to the house cats that I was surprised he'd use it. Looks like I was wrong.

Oh, and the two major machines using this ?network? _are_ laptops. I'm guessing that either the "routers" have built-in wireless or he's tacked his former wireless routers onto them.

If you have no objections, I'll see if I can get him to provide some actual details on what it looks like (you know, like actual model numbers ) and what kind of performance he's seeing. Post here? Or would you prefer e-amil?

Our favorite is "Crusty Bread", now slightly above $4, worth every penny. We buy it fresh (mostly a neighbor who often works there brings it by), then cut it up and freeze portions. Don't serve more than 2-1/2 slices per person for lunch or you'll feel very stuffed. This is the "real" bread.

There is also a great restaurant called "Old Europe" on Sutter Street. Excellent German dishes, run by a Czech owner. German and Czech beers on tap, the good stuff. Last time I was glad not to be the designated driver :-)

Us hardware guys are the same way. If it ain't broken don't fix it.

That would be ok but the cost kind of adds up. PLC usually slows to a crawl when someone fires up a vacuum cleaner or uncle Leroy turns on his angle grinder.

I've not used it myself... haven't laid any tile, other than repairs, for maybe 20 years now, but I've seen advertisements for concrete floor grinding to make them smooth.

Grind, then seal, then lay your sticky-backed carpet tiles ?:-)

None of the contractors wanted to touch the job if I don't clear out the offices. And I can't because of ongoing client work. Plus they'd just grind and pour SLC, bound to fail. There were some more major repairs needed such as ripping out parts and pouring new. T'is mostly done now, my wife is painting the walls right now.

Ouch.

I was thinking more of the "garret and schtick" principle... the general rule that bad comedians tend to die in abject poverty.

Speaking of unemployment insurance...

I was laid off the beginning of last year. Was on unemployment, but it ran out in July. As it was running out, contacted Cal. EDD to see if there were any federal extensions. None were yet available, but I was told that I would be notified if they finally came through.

Didn't think about it again till November. We started our own S corp, and had won a single contract. It didn't pay much, but we were able to pay ourselves for November and December, so we needed to get info on all the payroll taxes. While on the EDD website, saw that there HAD been federal extensions to unemployment... Back in July!

So, I tried to see if I was eligible for those months. Since you couldn't get through on the phones, I filed the paperwork on line. I received the first claim form, and was informed that I would be receiving a telephone interview. Decided not to mail in the claim form till after the interview. This was my first mistake. I now know that they base the interview on the information from that first claim form!

Day of interview, sitting waiting by the phone, wondering why they don't call, when I take a really close look at the form - my phone number is incorrect on it! Evidently, I had made a typo on the new form! Again, you can not reach anyone at EDD by phone, so I send an email with the phone number correction.

Two days later, I receive an email back that they have corrected the phone number, but that there was no need to send in the claim form - my claim had been denied. I would have to appeal in order to get any questions answered.

So, in December, I file the appeal. I ask if I can get unemployment from back last July, August and September. I also ask if being a corporate officer disqualifies me from unemployment. The only response is that I start getting claim forms again, with the note that no payment is coming now, as I was in judicial appeal.

Finally, on Tuesday, I get the hearing for the appeal. (yes, it only took two and a half months!) During the appeal, I find out that there are only two questions that will be addressed - Was I available to work during the period in question (This is now ONLY Dec. through the present) and was I working for Edmondson Engineering during this time. I reply I was available for work, but I was doing work for EEI, just nothing that was generating revenue. At the close of the hearing, the judge gives me the 'secret' number for EDD, where I can actually call a real, live human being and ask about those federal extensions. I also won't hear about the results of the hearing for at least 10 days.

I call, and after about 12 tries, finally get put on hold, and after holding about 10 minutes, ask my question. Basically, I am talking to a secretary or clerk, and she only writes down the question. Someone else will need to call me back and answer it.

So, today, I get the call back, while I am in the garage after spending two hours replacing the oil pan cover on my car. I am covered in oil, out of breathe, and am about an hour late for lunch! Now, I have to ask my questions and maybe get some answers.

Be careful what you wish for...

Learned a great deal in the next hour. Found out that my first claim had officially ended on 12/28/2008, so all this appeal stuff was for nothing. A new claim will have to be filed starting on that date. I will also need to have an interview to see if I am eligible. Doesn't look good, as I am an officer of a corporation and doing work for that corporation.

However, he was able to file a claim for the federal extensions to unemployment for last year. Again, will have yet another phone interview. However,this one is more hopefull. Again, it will be a couple of weeks of waiting.

Oh, the point of all this? Well, that thing about losing unemployment is not that far off. Right now, you get 26 weeks of basic unemployment, but the federal extensions add another 33 weeks on top of that! You can be on unemployment over a year now, and draw benefits.

I too had to look it up, I used a dictionary tool. (gnome dictionary applet) got answers from "Webster (1913)" and "Wordnet (r) 2.0" in a few seconds

Not fun or funny. I was is a similar way in 1992/1993. Basic UI would not much more than cover my house note now. And my loan is about 2X AGI at the time i bought (2003, 20% down).

It would just about cover my mortgage, as well (2008, >50% down, 15 year). The difference between engineers and carpet installers is that their UI is more like 80% of their nominal paycheck, rather than 20%. I know many tradesmen who like to be laid off and are, once a year.

I was "laid off" (took a buyout) in November of '07. I wasn't eligible for UI. Because my pension was significantly more money it made no sense to refuse it. ;-)

Well, I am lucky in that I am married to an accountant, and she really knows how to budget. Combined with the fact that we don't HAVE a mortgage, we can actually survive on unemployment, and even live decently!

It is just such a hassle doing the paperwork... 8-)

My experience is that concrete _never_ stops "dusting".

That's what I thought as well but to my surprise this one doesn't. Scrape -> vacuum (and that literally means every square inch) -> wash -> wash -> wash. Washing is with warm water, large wash cloth and frequent bucket changes. After the 2nd wash it ain't dusting anymore but I give it a 3rd wash just to make sure.

Milliken (the carpet mfg) advised against that. They were quite adamant about it. A layer of SLC would have been easiest but kind of impossible if you have to do the room half by half.
