How the f*ck do you think you look?

You apparently don't know s*it about science fiction*

What else don't you know s*it about?

The difference between Earth orbit and Jupiter's orbit is what?

10ft/s ? You probably expended more than that on the last pint you sloshed down.

  • more likely you're trolling

asteroid

aren't you (

I suspect a few small genetic tweaks will fix that, and which will likely be available decades before we get to the asteroids ie within the next ten years.

rather

I don't think so. The volume of habitation would be immense, as would public open spaces.

Do you make a habit of timing these things? ;-)

In the early '70s my brother[*] (an exec at the local power company) convinced my mother to put electric heat in her new house because their shiney new nuke was going to produce electricity so cheaply that it wouldn't be metered.

Same plan, same results. A century or two isn't going to change physics nor economics.

Exactly. In the same way, Space travel is simply an engineering problem not a physics one. No big breakthrough is needed nor especially likely to happen IMHO.

Space travel is an interesting scientific diversion and no more.

As for nuclear power, the cost of nuclear generated electricity in the UK was so uncompetitive a few yrs back that the Gov't here had to step in with a loan to our Nuclear Electric company to stop it going out of business since its generation costs made its electricity too expensive on the open market and it was being forced to trade at a loss or shut down !

Interesting. I'm sure I remember a reputable source quoting the increase in H2 concentration at altitudes much lower than that.

I guess it's understandable, once you understand why farts travel so fast. The speed of sound is also the average molecular velocity,

342m/s at room temperature, which is why you can seemingly almost instantly smell someone even if they fart in the adjacent room. Diffusion is remarkably rapid, even at -70C.

That problem was solved in "2001 A Space Oddity" by having the space station spun up. I think this is ho we will solve it for real. It means a fairly large craft is needed but for long trips the craft has to be big anyway.

Ok, I thought you might be an organic chemist, measuring dissociation constants of things that smelled better than the gunk they normally work on. ;-)

physics one.

Again, I must disagree. It's not an "engineering problem" because the physics (not to mention economics) isn't there to allow *engineering*.

s/scientific/fictional

That sounds like some pretty gross mismanagement.

Keith

No problem for an Orion vehicle weighing tens of thousands of tonnes.

:-) I try to avoid them, but sadly, sometimes the ensuite fan doesn't get turned on in time.

measured how?

I thought the word "Liberal" was based on the word "Liberty". I wonder what it is that the "Conservatives", whose name is based on "Conserve," which means "to save", hate about the idea of people wanting to preserve their Liberty.

Thanks, Rich

People put themselves in boxes.

The fun part is identifying them, and announcing them. ;-P

Seeing the difference between one box and another is a trivial exercise, once one recognizes the limits of one's own box. ;-) ;-) ;-)

Cheers! Rich

When was the last time you saw or heard any talking head, politician or anyone else in the media use the term "redneck" to describe a conservative? However, you do hear the term "liberal" bantered about easily by conservatives in the media and politics. But, guess what? It isn't working any longer as the Virginia govenor's race proved. Also, Sean Hannity looked like a complete ass the last time he was throwing the word around. Like anything else people are just tired of the labels, so much so that those that use them will have that fact be more prevalent than those they are labeling.

It was, before the term was co-opted by the socialists starting in the

1930s. That's why many "classical" liberals have taken to calling themselves "libertarians" instead. With your 'nym, I'd have thought you'd understand that a lot better.

And this paragraph illustrates perfectly *why* the socialists wanted to co- opt the word "liberal" so badly, so that those who attack socialism to conserve liberty can be accused of attacking liberty itself.

Yes, of people who would probably self identify as liberals.

You seem to love labels. You're always (hilariously) trying to force-fit me (and others) into your nutty boxes.

You can write wordy gibberish better than just about anyone I've ever read. The engine roars, the wheels are spinning and smoking, but the car is chained to the ground and goes nowhere.
