What if our goal is to bring the rock back to life or to bring new life?

My personal natural dose is scheduled to be 23 rem total, and it probably won't kill me.

If you look at the chart closely you can see that larger ships need less extra sheiding, at the size of Rhysy's animation the structural shieding of the ship would lead to a engine does lower than 50 rem. Additionally a 4,000 ton design allows margin to redesign the GA radiation shelter for much lower trip doses.

Actually, it was ~100 rems over 3-7 years (i.e. a rate comparable to what I said).

And yes, I think that the first few trips to Mars will be dangerous. By the time it's routine, the shielding problem should be under control. We will be a spce faring civilization by then.

Hello Ken,

Not around here. Most are belching some oil because of worn piston rings (major job). Valves are clattering because the stems are worn, a lil' oil leaks out the transmission side bearing, you can rock the distributor shaft to which the points are linked back and forth by hand. And oh, there is also some oil leaking into that assembly ;-)

Some of these are just very poor designs. Others have suffered excessive wear because the owners thought that changing the oil after 15,000 miles when it is pitch black would be enough. I have seen one guy whose engine ran hot. Old Catalina or something like that. There was plenty of water in the radiator and the pump belt was kinda ok, so that couldn't be it. Pulled the dip stick and whoops, the oil was nearly gone...

I wouldn't mind 90 minutes if it is safe and away from traffic. But out here there are too many crosses next to the road for people who have tried.

I am not so sure. In Europe almost any city or suburb is completely mixed use. Real estate agents make a similar sales volume. Except that people over there don't sell that often and commissions are about half (used to be about 3.4% in Germany versus 6% in the US).

I bet if they'd try to market a residential area where jobs are within biking distance and shops are less than a block of walking people would literally rip it out of their hands.

Hello Graham,

Nice car, nothing flopping around in the engine compartment. In California they call them "the engineer's cars".

But when you do need a spare part brace yourself. Once I was helping out a guy restore the main brake cylinder. It was in Scotland and since his car was out of commission while he took out the cylinder I drove to the store. They wanted a whopping 90 pounds for two O-rings, one cup and some simple metal clamps. And that was back in the 80's. That kind of made me decide not to buy one.

Toyota and Mitsubishi aren't bad either. Nice and tidy engines, not much loose stuff at all.

Repeated exposure to radiation is not considered healthy.

Actually the NRX series of nuclear thermal rocket engines, done in the

60's had performance about twice that of the SSMEs. They were never used because of bad PR.

Actually, the previous poster was talking about ~ 100 rems.

Additional exposure from space flight is another source indeed.

I see you consider a Mars mission dangerous in this respect. Kinda where I was coming from.

I wouldn't be caught dead buying a Saab or any other GM crap, particularly now. There isn't a European car I'd buy on a bet because they cost too much to keep on the road. Then there's the GM connection.

Um, perhaps there is a reason there is no longer water on Mars? ...like the escape velocity is too low to keep it there? mars might be interesting if it were about 4x bigger, but then we might have competition.
