This is the funny thing about Americans. The assumotion that there is always some new frontier to be subdued and conquered.

The reality is that we're stuck with planet Earth.

I think they are fully committed to detecting and discarding the ever-increasing flood of lies, spin and other misinformation that gets dumped on us via every available medium.

When I was a kid, all I had to worry about were the lies in the newspaper - and the Burnie Advocate (The Voice of North Western Tasmania) had only a limited number of things to lie about - and the lies from the local radio station (ditto).

When we finally got television, in 1956, this presented a whole new source of misinformation. This was also the time I got a subscription to the Reader's Digest, and it took me a couple of years before I could reliably detect the CIA-planted articles. Nowadays, I've got to cope with international newspapers, satellite TV, and the internet, which presents even more amazing rubbish than the twaddle peddled by our right wing friends here.

I'm afraid that our neurones are having to work ever harder just to keep up.
