How long do you think it will take for a tin whisker to bridge adjacent pads on this?

It doesn't look like it's that fine of pitch (if that's what you were implying). I measured the "ball" on a ballpoint pen and it measured about

0.045" diameter. So, this thing may simply be 1mm pitch.

It's a Fairchild synchronous switcher, actually a very nice part electrically.

They did an eval board, but it didn't work (!) so they'll have to spin it. So the sample is untestable.

I think we'll go with the National TSSOP-20 equivalent, with a single power pad on the bottom. This Fairchild thing would be a nightmare to rework.

I've started seeing a number of parts with multiple, funny-shaped power pads on the bottom.

Interesting, and just around a buck, nice. Digikey sez 6A, Fairchild sez

3A, also very interesting.

I wouldn't design it in myself unless I really, really had to. The large pads are way too close to the side pads for my taste and I don't like stuff where a visual solder quality check is nearly impossible.

Ahhh...it's 0.65mm pitch. No big deal unless you've got a bad case of presbyopia and can't even see 0.100" pitch parts and have to carry around an effing magnifying glass everywhere you go and have started wearing reading glasses and can't believe you're no longer twenty years old and get PISSED OFF everytime you start to think about it!!!

With red hair? Not a problem. Well, err, there could be a problem. When my wife finds out.

I got the sports car (280Z) when I turned 47. Now (at 68) I drive a pick-em-up truck ;-)

A friend treated himself to a new Corvette and took me along for a spin to test what G-force you can really put on it on mountain roads. Impressive. Tempting. If it just wouldn't be so stuffed with electronics.

C'mon, surely even you appreciate all those millions of transistors behind the anti-lock brakes and the airbags? :-)

Yes, I do. But when you have to press a button, which probably sends a CAN command to some uC, which then crunches some code, sends another CAN command to a receiver, which applies current to a bell-crank magnet or whatever to open the door, well, that's a bit much.
