Well, we're clearly the minority - shouldn't we get the same special treatment as all of the other minorities? ;-)
[BTW, that's a joke, in case any of you humourless antismokerists can't grasp it.]Cheers! Rich

So are you going to go on an anti-car crusade in the name of "life" too?
How about anti-bathtub?
How about anti-get-out-of-bed?
Life, so far, has been shown to be incontrovertibly fatal. What are you trying to "save?"
Thanks, Rich
I'm not sure what you have in mind. It has been shown that tobacco does not suppress the appetite very much. Quite a few people gain weight when they quit smoking, but that has to do with the appetite regulation system in the brain (disrupted by any addictive drug) and is not the same as saying that they would have gained it if they never smoked.
The biggest change I notice is that middle-school and high-school students don't have recess any more -- in fact they don't have much opportunity to move around. Public schools operate in near-lockdown mode, meanwhile serving lunch menus designed in the 1930s to fatten up undernourished children. The local schools are proposing to ban pizza (because it's "junk food") and keep relying on fried chicken (which is more fattening). "Junk food," to them, means anything that became popular after 1940.
Your right to emit bad smells (consisting of poisonous fumes), like your right to wave your arm, ends at my nose.
As a practical matter, if you smell bad, you can't compel other people to like you.
Good point. Smoking makes people fat.
John
For merely my own temporary amusement, I want to keep the people that I like alive for as long as I'm here.
John
...which causes global warming.
Yep, the hysteria of "You are going to take away my pacifier!" NO!!!!!'
Its not bad! I LIKE IT! I don't care if it kills me horribly in a few years, I want it NOW!
People have always been able to justify a stupid action today, when the consequences don't happen till tomorrow. I find smokers among the worst of these.
Rich, the only reason cigarrettes aren't outright banned right now is the tobacco lobby still has enough money and clout to stop it. I am one of those rabid anti-smokerists. I watched my uncle, father and mother all die from smoking related disease, and buried my older brother when he just dropped dead from a heart attack. All were heavy smokers, who thought that "It won't happen to me" and "I am too addicted to quit" You have just been lucky so far...
Charlie
And it makes your genitals shrink. With all that fat they look smaller again.

Bwahahahaha!

I quit smoking in 1993. Five years later I had a heart attack.
Conclusion: Quitting smoking causes heart attacks ;-)

Is this a joke? John, I had the impression that you were at least literate.
Oh, well, f*ck literacy, antismokerism reigns supreme!
(IOW, you've got it completely ass-backwards: It's _antismokerism_ that makes people fat.)
Thanks, Rich
Well, notwithstanding John's wrong, i.e., it isn't smoking that makes people fat, it's antismokerism (which is really just a symptom of a much more serious underlying disorder, but people are in heavy denial).
As far as smoking shrinking the genitals, not only is that right up there in the top ten silliest things ever heard, but even if it _were_ true, it would simlpy expose those who are incompetent to do the job with the tools at hand.
Remember, assigning blame does not establish causation.
Thanks, Rich
Well, I see you're wiser than God.
That's OK, since the God you seem to be in the grip of is the God of obedience.
Personally, I worship the God of Free Will.
Thanks anyway, but I have no intention of joining your cult.
Good Luck to you too! Rich
Q.E.D.
And even though my Dad(RIP) quit smoking about 50 years ago, you know what? He died anyway!
Antismokerism does _NOT_ confer immortality.
Cheers! Rich
OK, so can I ban people who drench themselves in that heavy cologne that smells like vomit, from using the elevator?
Thanks, Rich
For heavy smokers, the lung damage and/or carbon monoxide loading is enough that exercize becomes unpleasant - they get winded quickly - so they don't do it.
I'm one countercase.
John
My preferred nomenclature is actually "scut bunnies."
John
Anti-cilantroist!

Actually, I think product liability law is going to take its course without any special anti-tobacco legislation.
It's already been shown that the tobacco industry deceived the public massively from about 1950 to 1964. They knew they were killing people and they conspired to keep us from hearing about it. A colleague of mine, a linguist, is now studying the documents from that era because they are good specimens of dishonest language.
Lung cancer is probably the most painful death a person can suffer, other than maybe fatal burns. And actually, smoking causes that, too (it is, I seem to recall, the number one cause of house fires).
