There are other causes of lung cancer (e.g., radiation), as well as cases of lung cancer with no identifiable cause. I wouldn't conclude that her cancer was caused by secondhand smoke unless there's (at the very least) evidence that she was exposed to a lot of it (and even that isn't proof).

It costs the hotel less to maintain a non-smoking room. Less cleaning is needed, and the curtains and carpet last longer.

Ever hear what happened at 3801 Market St one day a few years ago in a rather dry summer like Philadelphia has all too often despite its infamous humidity? Someone tosses a burning cigarette butt, and it starts a fire that makes the tree in the front yard flare up and then the front windows break... At the city "1st District" office building of the AME Church! Same year a few of those little mounds of mulch go up in flames after having cigarettes tossed onto them due to being awfully flammable when heated by sunlight on warm days with humidity below about 30-40%, let alone the 20% that Philadelphia can achieve when the weather there is in a low humidity mood! And if the humidity can get that low in Philadelphia, think how low it can get in drier areas and how flammable mulch or other vegetable matter can get there! What about a layer of pine needles or other evergreen needles 35 miles (55 km) SE of Philadelphia in New Jersey's "Pine Barrens" or in some less humid area? (I think a fair amount of North America has to be more capable of low humidity than Philadelphia or almost-coastal New Jersey!) Makes me think Philadelphia police should enforce the littering law in effect there! But if they do so successfully, I will watch for flying pigs!

Oh, I surely see enough of a non-leftist doing that garbage in some of the newsgroups that I frequent. He is based in Australia, and I suspect he does not come to USA because many people here have guns, and a jury presented with evidence of what sort of sub-troll that offender is may decide that strong evidence of any defendant killing the sub-troll deliberately is not sufficient evidence that the defendant committed a crime! The famous sub-troll clames to be retired and is widely believed to be receiving some sort of welfare or disability payments for mental illness, and the offender is not a leftist!

No, it's just that angry, neurotic, self-absorbed, rude people naturally become leftists. They are unhappy with the way the world treats and reacts to them, so they want to change the rules for everyone. You usually have only to take a look at their private lives to see how far their "progressive" philosophy truly extends beyond themselves.

People who are happy with themselves, and willing to take on the world as-it-is, are less inclined to want to change it macroscopically.

Of course, a few well-adjusted people really want to change the world out of altruism. They're great, but very rare. And if they actually understand how the world works, and which changes produce actual good, they're even rarer.

Actually, you get situations like I am now running into.

My wife is DEATHLY allergic to smoke. She is also almost blind, and directly connects the two. (long story...) However, we now have handicapped plates on the car, so we COULD part right by the door in many situations. But, we can't. It seems that, since they can't light up inside a place of business, then the smokers all gather around the doors of a business, whether it is a restaraunt, grocery, drug store, or you name it. So, now that nice convenient parking places are also hopelessly contaminated! And don't even get her started on running the 'gauntlet' every time you go into and out of a store...

Notice that when you see a driver smoking they almost ALWAYS have the window open? They don't like the extra smoke either... 8-)
