You've hit the nail dead-on. Europeans don't give a rat's ass about Palestinians or Iraquis or Africans, never have and never will. What they care about is that they no longer rule the world, militarily or economically or culturally. Some day the US won't, either, but I'm certain we'll be a lot more sporting about it.

If Europeans choose to let their population decline gently ("choose" in the sense that individuals elect to have few or no kids) that's up to them. Personally, I think Earth would be better off with a planetary population of a few hundred million. The economic consequences - fewer actual workers supporting many students and many more retirees - can actually be managed with a moderate amount of discomfort.

What Europe can't do, with a declining and ageing population and a declining industrial (and cultural!) infrastructure, is be much of a world power. That will take some getting used to, and is already a good part of the resentment towards the USA.

The big problem, of course, will be immigration.

My wife is Irish/Italian, which means she's both friendly and cooks good.

The big problem here in Florida is an overstock of homes. At the rate we are selling to "furriners" (UK, Germany and China mostly) the demand is expected to catch up to supply again by the winter. My wife still has about a hundred sold and unbuilt. They will either build and close or forfeit about $50,000. Either way she doesn't care.

It becomes a problem when you are counting on the kids paying for their parent's pensions via taxes. We are quickly reaching a point here where there will be 2.5 workers per retiree.
