Video8 PAL/NTSC

Oct 24, 2007 4 Replies

Guess lots of you would know this: Can I replay a Video8 tape that's been recorded on a PAL Camcorder on a NTSC camcorder? I have not too much a clue about what's going on inside these machines.

Thanks!

Tony

Not typically. There may be a dual standard machine around somewhere, but I've never seen one.

Hi tony, No the best bet is buy a NTSC camcorder from USA , but to record your tapes, you will also need a Video converter to change NTSC to PAL. Could start getting very expensive Allan

Thanks for the replies. You see, what I want to do is digitising my old Video8 tapes. I haven't got a working camcorder to output them to a PC video card. The Sony DCR TRV480 camcorder does digital and analog. It can read Video8/High8 tapes and firewire them to a PC. Unfortunately PAL ones are hard to get but NTSC ones are plenty around. I could imagine that Sony doesn't use chip sets that are specialised on one standard. Ideally There could be a way to switch (code bridges/dip switch/ROM change) an NTSC camcorder to PAL, and bingo I could digitise my tapes. :-) Someone working in the field would possibly know how.

Thanks

Tony
