superCollider?

I've noticed that SuperCollider is included in the Raspbian distribution (scsynth and sclang), but despite following several documentation trails, I'm not having any luck getting any useful behaviour. Has anybody here played with it?

I'm not really familiar with any of the components (never even got around to installing jack on any of my machines), so maybe someone can aid me in my newbieness.

I think I started jackd properly ("jackd-d alsa"), and I thought I started scsynth ("scsynth -u 9999") gathering that I need an OSC port for sclang to talk to it, but though sclang seems to start up, and prints apparently standard startup messages, it then just sits there. Trying something like '"Hello World!".postln;' from the tutorial I found gets no response.

jackd does say "SuperCollider was not run: state = 1" but that doesn't tell me much.

Anybody got a recipe?

Thanks,
