Sounds like the HV to the CRT final anode is dying off. Could be almost anything ...

Then a bad cap, or possibly a bad solder joint, are first favourites. Shouldn't be that difficult to locate with a can of freezer and a hair dryer. Does it definitely 'balloon' as it fades ? Often, a fading display on a CRT monitor, is down to nothing more than bad joints on the tube base heater pins, but in that case, it is just a gentle fade away to black, with no real alteration is picture size.
