HI I have a NEC rear projection NEC PJ3715EN YEAR IS 1996 TV and just want to get advice on troubleshooting it....there was a black bar on the bottom whacking the TV from behind fixed it so I suspect a bad solder joints. Also the color is not right I just want steps to trouble shoot I have experience with electronics thanks

You've already trouble shot the vertical. No trouble shooting the color other than making sure the lenses on the crts are clean and the fluid inside is clear and the mirror is clean. Maybe get a service manual and tweak the video settings. 11 years on a projector is getting up there in years so you also have to consider that one or more of the crts maybe be weak.

Is Whacking your primary trouble-shooting method?

deliper: I am certain that whacking won't "help" the problem with the color either.... If you already suspect bad solder joints what troubleshooting advice do you want?? Your method of troubleshooting is already troublesome. Fix the suspect solder joints as you surmised and see if that solves the problem, but don't keep whacking the television or you will have bigger and more expensive problems.
