We had a load get terribly out of balance today during the spin cycle. When I went to open the lid I was very surprised that the motor and basket kept right on spinning. On other cycles the machine shuts down so the lid switch should be working. Is this a malfunction? I always thought that opening the lid during a spin would shut down the motor.

Maybe that lid switch has multiple contacts or something similar is going on. In its current condition it sounds dangerous - I believe a spinning washing machine tub can rip off an arm. You must find the problem and correct it for safety's sake!
