Direct-view set works fine as long as HV not connected to crt. Puts out
30.5KV. With HV hooked up, the HOT shorts. Can't decide if it's the tube. Any ideas? Thanks, Stuart.

Pull the CRT socket and try it. The only place the HV can go in a bad CRT is to the socket pins unless the glass is cracked. A very gassy CRT can overload the HV and short the HOT (does the CRT neck glow?). Andy Cuffe

Does it blow immediately or after the heaters warm up ?
