How many use Google Groups here

There are responsible engineering conversations, and then there's bitching and moaning. In OSS mailing lists we don't put up with bitching and moaning. Programmers are expected to have rational views, constrain their emotions and bile, not be knee jerk, make complete presentations of what exactly is the problem, and make productive suggestions about corrective action to take. People who don't know how to behave like a programming professional, and work towards solutions, are typically banned from OSS mailing lists.

So if a bunch of programmes are currently engaging Google in a responsible engineering discussion, that's wonderful. Power to them.

one way or the other, yet. I

I consider this tiny window I am typing in and the way GG messes up the replies to be fairly serious. Does it still work? Yes, but not well enough to keep me using it once I find an alternative.

I will freely admit that I can be very cheap at times. But this is not one of them. I am stuck with web based access because I can not install any software at work that is not "approved". I seriously doubt that I can get anyone to allow me access to newsgroups "officially". I am actually surprised that they have not yet cut off access to google groups. I can no longer log into Yahoo groups and all web based email (or any other email that is not work based) is unaccessable. So during the working day, GG is my only contact with the "real" engineering world.

I only use it for searching the archive. I would *never* use it for posting or regular reading; it was too clumsy originally, and the new dog's breakfast of an interface just distances me even more from what people posted.

There was, a long time ago, a guy (I think he worked at Supernews) who developed his own crap-free interface to deja (not long after the Google takeover, I think). I cannot remember who or where it was, but Google surely provide enough API information to enable anyone to do similar ;)

I had a different set of problems (company provided slow computers while I had a couple of double CPU machines idling at home, likewise for storage space,) but same solution:

If Big Brother will allow it, establish a VPN connection to a home server and/or bring your own laptop laptop to work (*) and install whatever you want on it.

Back to your original question, I use Google groups only when I need to search for something in old messages, almost never to just read or post.

(*) I actually brought to work my own desktop computer with a double head graphics card, so I could use a couple of company provided old monitors with a 1024x786 recommended resolution as a single screen.

Going off topic, another benefit was being able to do full system builds in 5 to 8 minutes instead of the 15 minutes to 1+ hour that it took if I used the shared file server / build server. Talk about being penny wise and pound fool, I took me almost two years to convince "management" that it made economic sense to get me faster computer. The new machine arrived in the middle of the customary two weeks notice after I accepted a new job ...

I feel your pain. Our machines here are not too bad. But the network they are on can be slow at times. But big brother is really on the job here. We are not allowed to bring in any of our own machines and can't take work home. We also can't take food or drink into the lab. So we are left working 9 to 5 unless we are in a big crunch and then the company pays for dinner! ...we eat well...

I run a 17" monitor at 1280x1024 resolution. I see no problem. If you run your monitor at a lower resolution because you are, say, blind as a bat, well I guess you could have a problem.

Serious enough to file a bug report so that it will be fixed? That's pretty much the acid test of open source, and the concept seems reasonable for free stuff also.

Which would be...?

When you're at work, you're supposed to be doing your job. If your job is so stupid that you don't care about goofing off, then go find another job. You'd be doing yourself a favor.

Yes, if you don't see a problem, then there isn't one, right?

You are a funny guy. Arrogant, but funny too. You post a lot of crap under the guise if being right. But if you don't get it, then I seriously doubt there is anything I can say that will help you see it.

I don't think 'funny' is the right word. Nor is 'amusing'. If we could be sure he wasn't infecting the innocent we could concentrate on those aspects. Maybe we should have an adjective hunt.

Are you going to define your problem with more precision? And perhaps take responsibility for parts of it, if appropriate? Like, "yeah I use 800x600, I'm blind." Or, "I'm biased towards huge text windows that let me see everything for miles." Don't we all, but a lot of us spent our own $$$ in the bad old days of smaller monitors. Some things aren't dealbreakers; we use what works.

Lately I'm posting in this newsgroup for my personal amusement only. It uses up less time than some of the other timewasters I could get into. So if I'm a funny guy, I'm not shocked. To me this is just some ping-pong, with someone else who's equally bored at the moment he writes, and engaging in an equally pointless activity. Some people play tidly-winks, others wrestle.

Actually I do also scan for job posts. ;-)

Maybe you should rent Les Miserables. You remind me of Inspector Javert.

Yes, I already knew that. Your posts show it clearly. No real thinking, just words.

Personally I use one of the free Unix shell providers (although I did pay to upgrade my account from a free version). Gives me a proper newsreader and mail client and all the filtering I could possibly want. Given that the system's website has both ssh and telnet java clients, you can access it almost anywhere provided that at least one of ports 22 and 23 are not blocked. Of course, most systems have a least a telnet client installed anyway so that's even more convienient.

The only possible downside it of course that it's a Unix sustem, so Windows-only users may find the learning curve a little steep. Myself, I regard its Unix nature as a plus, not a minus.

Do you think you personally contribute much to there success by means of hitting a GG page? ;-) I think the traffic that user like ourselves create for google probably wouldn't even register.

I dont like GG, but then again, I never have. Its handy for searching archived posts, but thats about it.

Techies keep building the internet, however it is now a different generation. Its no longer the command prompts and text based pages that we all like so much. Sigh.....

In comparison, yes. You might consider a career change. McDonalds is always looking for burger flippers, and you may very well qualify.

Thank you. That is another excellent example of my statement.

I don't know about web-based access to usenet, but if your ISP has a news server (and many do), you can use a program for free called Free Agent

I am using Agent which is the pay-for version of the same program, but I used Free Agent for years and liked it a lot.

So... you started this thread... and you continue this thread... the only "thought" is whatever you want to grouse about?

Actually, I kind of smiled when I read rickman's comment to you. In the narrow case of what he was discussing and your responses to him here in this thread, he is right on target. You were flip and without value. In the broader case, and scanning back through about 30 of your recent posts over the last couple of days just now, I find there is __some__ broader truth to his comment, as well.

And arguing in extremes doesn't make your point. Another unthinking response. Rickman doesn't need to be "god's gift" to anything in order to be able to point up the obvious evidence of your lack of useful commentary to him on this thread.

Stick around, though. I appreciate your presence. You make a great example.

Ok, this has deteriorated pretty badly. I guess there is no point in commenting further...

Anyone care to discuss the topic of Google Groups and the new interface? ...new interface ...anyone?
