Many reasons in fact but a butt joint ( a straight one ) is notoriously weak and prone to damage.

I've seen straight joins done, there was this metal thing with hundereds of rings on each end of the belt and a wire was through the rings linking the ends.

Because if the joints were orthogonal, they would go, "SLAP! SLAP! SLAP!..." and the joint would fail much sooner.
