Scarcely. Hillary Clinton lost the nomination to Obama by a distinctly smaller margin than McCain lost the election.

Sarah Palin was a disaster, but then again so was Margaret Thatcher (though it took the Uk. electorate a little longer to wake up). On the other hand, Andrea Merkel seems to be doing fine, as did Golda Meir in her time.

Thatcher was a disaster - eventually. We didn't take all that long (sometime halfway through her second term) to realise we were going to have to wait for the Labour party to get it's s*it together before we could vote for anyone else - to vote labour (although I did) in 1983 would have been a catastrophe. Paul, I don't think Mr. Obama experienced slavery or segregated schools. Being roughly the same age as him, I'm confident he didn't experience being sent to the back of the bus or not being allowed to vote. I just happen to think there is more to the man than the color of his skin and/or ethnic heritage. Sorry if that offends you. For me, part of nearing "the mountaintop" is working at losing the baggage.
