Why to use buffers?

Hi,

I have to modify an old circuit, i have to reduce the circuit but i am finding buffers(Voltage followers) being using after gain section and before comparator section using Opams. Can these buffers be removed? Why are buffers used?

Thanks and regards Nick

Buffers make a low impedance copy of a signal.

Do the comparators have positive feedback to the signals that have been isolated by buffers? The positive feedback may cause steps in an unbuffered signal.

Are the unbuffered signals from opamps or other low impedance sources?

Hi,

No. There are two signals generated from a single signal one inverted and other non inverted. The buffers follow these (inv and non inv.) which are followed by one comparator each. The inverting opam is followed by negaive feedback comparator to the buffered signal. And the non-inverting opam is followed by positive feedback to the reference signal and not the buffered signal.

Yes the signal is from an Opam (gain stage).

Thanks and regards, Nick

In your case, I think an experiment is in order. Measure the buffer output signals with some test signals, then pull them, and jumper the input to the output and see if everything looks just the same. Your circuit may well be over designed.
