Video adapters

I had to address a "lack of understanding" at one of the non-profits that I support. Specifically, confusion over cables.



It seems folks now rely on the type and polarity of a cable-end connector exclusively to determine "what connects to what".



In this case, I encountered a DV-DVI adapter plugged into the DP of a monitor, mated to a DVI-DVI cable which then was connected to a computer's DVI port.



And, the invariable conclusion that <something> was broken (computer, monitor, cable, etc.).



Of course, the flaw lies in the assumption that the presence of a DP connector on an adapter means it can be fitted to ANY DP "receptacle".



I had thought of imposing a ban on adapters to avoid this mix-and-match problem.



But, that is flawed as a cable can be a "very long" adapter!



Thinking about the various types of video cables, there are so few that are truly bidirectional (imposing no real restrictions on their deployment) to be considered "safe".



I can't imagine a "simple" (these folks are just "warm bodies", largely unsupervised) criteria to tell them how to regard interconnects. I.e., a DP-to-DVI cable could be seen as connecting a DVI *output* to a DP input -- even though it actually is a DP output connecting to a DVI input. Thank the folks who decided the connector should not convey its intended application!



Short of PAINTING/tagging "approved cables", is there any criteria I can give them to fix this problem going forward?


My fix for unidirectional cables in a clueless environment is to put a spot of bright yellow epoxy on the monitor end (and on the monitor).

I do carry various bidirectional adapters with me since I can carry fewer cables that way. The profusion of "standards" is a nightmare!

Some are more interoperable than others.

The monitor will likely disappear in hours (as testing *monitors* is also an activity that has to be supported).

But, I could use color similarly -- but probably a color for each end (so they are SURE they have an "approved cable" by looking at EITHER end of it). There will likely be hundreds (literally) of "unapproved/unmarked" cables present and no idea as to how the ends will "naturally" appear (despite unofficial "standards")

Yes. I've already had to try to explain DVI-A/I/D with very little luck. And, dual[link isn't (usually) observable visually.

The risk is that someone erroneously decides that "all these monitors (or, all these COMPUTERS) are broken" and discards them without ever considering that the high number of APPARENT failures might be indicative of something else amiss?

[Once "proclaimed" defective, steps are taken that WILL render it inoperable!]

I took a quick overview of the various connector choices and video standards and have decided its just not possible to prepare a "robust" system to allow "uninformed" users to mix-and-match cables and devices.

I think someone *knowledgeable* can piece together adapters (and partial adapters) to meet a particular one-off need. But, generalizing that so others aren't just as BAD off is unlikely -- you can come up with adaptations that suggest X can connect to Y but they only

*appear* to work "mechanically".

(sigh)

Another decision by the High Priests of Technology designed to keep them artificially secured in their positions...
