Quantum sensor breakthrough could reveal dark matter and ancient gravitational waves Date: July 7, 2026 Source: Imperial College London Summary: Scientists have taken an important step toward building quantum detectors that could reveal some of the universe’s biggest secrets. Using a prototype device with two clouds of ultracold atoms, researchers showed that a clever noise-canceling technique can recover hidden signals even when individual measurements appear completely overwhelmed by interference.

It took some doing, but I found the underlying open-access paper in Nature at the following DOI:

. It makes sense. The trick appears to be to cancel RIN (Relative Intensity Noise) noise in the lasers by using the same laser to drive a matched set of atom interferometers, this implementing a gradiometer.

Yes, that link is given at the bottom of the article in sciencedaily.com

Reading it all takes some time :-) They are pretty clear about what they are doing.

Wonder what they will find out about the big bang (if it ever happened, maybe one of many...)

And I wonder if the same system can be used for other things that need a lot of sensitivity. Detect alien communication? ;-)

Hard to say, but increasing the sensitivity by orders of magnitude will certainly lead to many discoveries.

Of course. Only those that use gravity waves. It would take an immense amount of power, but travels no faster than light. Seems unlikely.

History repeats itself, in the future and teh past...

I did a suggetsion in a notehr newsgroup about a SETI search fro alien life signals that somehow resembles thne noise cancelling method.

Here that >>>John snipped-for-privacy@the.keyboardwrote:

Anyways, gravity waves and moon tides, easy to detect... The intergalactic travel agency has adviced against visiting planet earth as it is infested by human beings, and those are considered extremely dangerous. That is why no aliens here..

Re-read it. It is not RIN that's being cancelled, it's a few radians of actual phase noise, source unspecified. After cancellation, what remains is 10^-5 level noise, so its a 10^6 to one cancellation.

Phil can probably tell us the back-story.
