Probably 15 years back, I read of a US artillery radar system which was designed to detect an inbound artillery shell, plot its trajectory, calculate the source coordinates and fire a retaliatory round (or more) before the incoming arrived.
Wanted to look up info on it , but a bit hazy on the system's name - IIRC it was RED-something. I figured the assembled wisdom/experience here would include someone who can join the dots for me.

Amazing what these scientists dream up. Unfortunately the other side has smart guys too. Problem is, if you have the radar turned on, there's nothing to stop the other side from sending an artillery shell FIRST to the radar's location. Once the radar's quiet, the artillery can move on to the actual target.
IIRC the US did this first thing in Iraq.

I was a tech in the USAF during the "Vietnam Era", repairing jamming transmitters and radar warning receivers and such, when they discovered "Home-On-Jam". ;-)

The Firefinder radars operate on different freq bands than other radars,with shorter propagation distances. They are not air-search radar freqs.There are also LPI(low probability of intercept) radars.

That was one of the earliest techniques applied in WWI. Maybe not counterbattery, but there is a shooter locator, using a microphone array as the primary sensor, deployed in Iraq- the Boomerang.

True. Air-to-ground HARM (anti-radiation) missles. It was the "knock out their eyes" part of the strategy that Swartzkopf adopted.
I was A.F., stationed at Da Nang, AKA Rocket City, in 1970. I heard rumors about a system that could compute point of launch of the 122mm rockets that Charlie sent our way at least once a month. Still don't know if the rumors were true.

NFG, whatever the signal strength coming back to the radar source, it's going to be 60 to 100 db stronger at the bad guys location. Unavoidable from the geometry.

Other systems include the ARTHUR from Sweden, and, IIRC Thompson in France made one for the French forces.
