I think you will find there are 2 classes of people to whom your question actually applies:

  1. Those people who have actually designed RADAR jammers for the military. Those people cannot tell you they did it, nor how it works because they would certainly be divulging classified information.

  1. Those people who have successfully built RADAR jammers for police traffic RADAR. Since those devices are generally illegal either by state law, or by federal FCC regulations and laws, the people who built such devices would be reluctant to tell of their experience so as to reduce their risk of prosecution.

  2. Actually there is a 3rd category -- those fitting categories 1, or especially 2, who are stupid enough to tell about it.

I have, on occasion, stumbled across some guy's website claiming he has a design for a police RADAR jammer, but I stay away from stuff like that.

You can always Google.

BTW -- I don't fit into either category 1 or 2 (or 3).

Sure! It's called a Marx generator coupled to a parabolic reflector... also works well on automobiles with loud stereo systems and any other pesky electronics. ;)

I repaired a bunch of them when I was in the US Air Force.

If you want to jam radar guns, then I'm afraid you're pretty much on your own.

You could get a 1KW power inverter, and set an ordinary microwave oven on your dash with the door ripped off and the interlocks jury- rigged.

You can knock off the BS. I happen to know that radar jamming is VERY illegal "down under".

Plus we "professionals" don't just hand out potentially-harmful schematics to illiterates who can't spell or use proper grammar ;-)

Perhaps, but highly inadvisable if it's the manned type.

Has anybody actually made a working radar jammer themself?


Hey, I kinda liked my idea. It's novel and just might work! :)

The technology behind "jamming" a radar signal is no small feat. From the sounds of it, you just want a schematic and plans to build a $10 way to get out of speeding tickets. Well, even if you had a schematic, you're still missing the hardware you need to make it. It's not a simple project, by any means. And when you try to place an order for microwave components, Big Brother is going to be watching.

I'd recommend you just not speed. It's much easier, sorry.

No, but I have thought about how you would make a spoofer.

You would have separate receive and transmit antennas. The receive antenna would be fed to a mixer. The other mixer input would be a Doppler shift frequency you generate according to vehicle speed (that is, it is the exact amount of Doppler shift you need to send your detected speed down to 0. Then you low pass filter the mixer output to select the lower sideband, and send the output of the low pass filter to the transmit antenna.

In reality, you probably couldn't design a low-pass filter with a sharp enough cutoff, so you would have to get the lower sideband some other way. The basic idea is to use a Single Side Band Suppressed Carrier type of modulation. I'm not a microwave guru, so I would have to go read up on this stuff a little more before I could say whether this would really work.

And it might be hard to provide sufficient isolation between the transmit and receive antennas. The system might run off chasing its tail if the transmit is allowed to feed back into the receive.

Anyway, it's easy to sketch a system out. The devil is in the details. ;-)

About 10 years ago, I was designing a 5.8 Ghz toll tag system for a European test. It used "reflective backscatter", which is caused by modulating the Radar Cross Section (RCS) with data and looking at the sidebands created on the return signal...... Since the RCS of a credit card size tag at 5.8 Ghz is very very small, I did used a patch receiving antenna (about 1 inch square) to an OOK switch, to a 30 db gain amp, to a transmitting antenna. All on the same credit card size substrate.I could get about 40 db antenna isolation so the thing didn't oacillate. It worked great, and could simulate several hundred square cm of modulated backscatter reflector...... \\

Since nothing was 'generated" and the illuminator signal was simply picked up, modulated, amplified and sent to a return antenna, there was no FCC or CE requirement.

It worked great.

But it occurred to me, why not use the same technique for a radar jammer. Whatever frequency hits the receive antenna is amplified and modulated with a 2V/lambda doppler OOK signal, and the radar gun would register a Volkswagen going at 250 mph, or some such, and NOTHING is transmitted until a radar gun signal hits the tag..... Seemed like a great idea.

I never tested it on a radar gun, but I am sure the technique is worth considering.....

i didn't know you yanks were soo woosy!!!! what happened to land of the free. I just wanted some info... possibly a schematic... its not ilegal down here in Aus, possibly it is to use it but not to gather information

Aside from shooting up the box which is what I assume you meant ( no concept of 30-06's here in the UK - is that a 300 calibre revolver ? ) - other tactics have been used against radars on poles - like pulling them down with 4WDs and sawing the pole down ! I believe the citizens of some countries have even resorted to 'thermite treatment' too - lol !

In Holland IIRC - 'concerned citizens' seek out the mobile radar traps and post warning signs in advance.

This damn country ( or some of the goddam self appointed do-gooders ) is fixated by speed radar despite the fact that road fatalities have not budged as much as a significant inch since their introduction. We get around 3000 - 3500 ? road fatalities p.a. and have done consistently so for many years now.

The fact that road deaths is attributable mainly to *lousy driving* seems to be lost on said goody goodies.

It's a great way of earning extra revenue for the authorities though.

Nothing better to see Americans justify their collasally high rate of gun related mortality. *And* claim that it's somehow a better society for it.

A little while back I caught one of the local regional TV programmes about a US family that had moved to one of the RAF bases that the US operate here in the UK. It's like a little community in itself with shops and leisure facilities and schools ( wow - you have to - what is it ? - salute the flag every morning ? or is it just swear the oath of allegiance ? - freaky anyway ) so the residents don't actually *have* to venture out into the real UK even.

When this family did - the wife was 'worried' because the Police *didn't* carry guns !

I think she missed the point. The Police here don't carry guns because they

*don't need to* !
