And that's not the only scheme that looks do-able. Buzz Aldrin's book _Encounter with Tiber_ is a lovely story in its own right (science fiction), but especially for the multiple interstellar voyages- he has a different motor design for each.

As much as i liked Bester's book i think Terry was referring to the Flash Crowd story in The Long Arm of Gil Hamilton. See also Jack of Eagles.
