Re: OT: Is this question too challenging for a BSEE graduate?

That's why I stick with software that does what I want it to. Netscape, from before AOL bastardized it.

BTW, this group has 722,413 messages on the Giganews servers.

Giganews is a bit low in message support. News.planet.nl has 806470 messages here.

I'd admit to it. :-) (Having grown up in Wisconsin, Wisconsin Dells was a popular destination for, e.g., summer camps.)

Also a good place to take the kids if the parents little casinos -- Ho-Chunk casino is very close.

My interview was in the days when microcontrollers couldn't do much and the entire FFT was made from TTL parts, except for big expensive A/ D and digital multiplier. I designed one entire board about 10" x 12" that was just memory for a waterfall display. I participated in design improvements that added Z80 uPs to interact with operator controls and improve display presentations, but the heart of the machine was still 4 big drawers filled with TTL, with a 100-Amp 5VDC power supply hanging on the back of each.

Ah, I see -- that is rather more challenging.

If someone asked me to code up an FFT in, e.g., VHDL I'd definitely have to hit the books before coming up with a decent result (assuming, "...let's just use the one provided by the FPGA vendor..." wasn't considered acceptable...)

I probably could manage one of Don Lancaster's "color organs" without needing to do much of any actual reading/research first. :-)

100A power supplies are scary...

Right. The real engineering was what to do with all that heat.

I can't think of one.

No P&H here. ;-)

FYI: Disk => DASD but DASD =/> Disk

IFF the processor interface is fast enough. In the case of the disk, the channel bus was only 1.5Mb/s, IIRC, synchronized with the rotation rate.

By those measures, the S/360 and PPC only have a one-level stack. ;-)

It's like Lake George, NY, without the lake. What a hole!

I suppose, if you're stuck in WI. I always thought WD was the pits, though. My wife wanted to go there on our honeymoon, so we stopped by on the way back. She found out why I didn't want to go there very quickly.

Add a zero to that and it's scary. Good thing all I had to do was provide the controls. ;-)

Yeah, it is kinda kitschy, I suppose. But water parks and amusement parks have near-universal appeal... some of the other things like wax museums... mmm... not so much...

It does have a lake -- Lake Delton -- although back in 2008 it went away completely temporarily after it broke through its banks:

Madison there is consistently rated as one of the top 100 places to live... (see,

Middleton -- immediately adjacent to Madison --, where I grew up and my parents still (more or less) live, is ranked #1 on some lists:

I've been to Phoenix once -- for a bit over a week -- and while it's probably hotter than I'd like long-term, I did enjoy the visit.

The stats seem to compare favorably to the "best places to live" cities:

Funny, but I think of the Three Stooges anytime someone mentions Niagra Falls. :)
