Some of us thought it justice when the French repaid the Americans by shoving their unwinnable war in Vietnam off on the Americans. De Gaulle's laugh is said to have been heard all the way down in the village when he heard that the Americans fell for that crap about the dominoes falling (2).

(1) Pol Pot and his entire gang of mass murderers were not peasants or even real Cambodians except by birth; they had spent the greater part of their lives in France; they were, root and branch, French intellectuals of the evolue class, Fanonites of the most bloodthirsty kind.

(2) De Gaulle, like many soldiers, was an intellectual; like many intellectuals he was spiteful; I have always found it surprising that so many conservative intellectuals, such as de Gaulle and Enoch Powell, are instinctively anti-American in much the same way as the old left was instinctively anti-American.
