Bret, I'm not plonking you, but you're asking for too much work for free. For $350, I'll do a preliminary feasibilty study. I take PayPal.

No more than off topic cross posters can be educated.

If there was all out war between stupid people and smart people, the stupid people would win..

Since there are much more stupid people on the planet and there is strength in numbers, the smart people would probably get wiped out. It'll be stupid war done in dumass way. :P D from BC

Like you I decided one third of the way that life was too short to reread for the umpteenth time someone's wet dreams about defeating the liberal-intellectual dragons lthat are threatening his health and sanity..

But I must not neglect to point out that Mr. Ludwig omitted to remind us of how those liberal intellectuals designed the gas chambers and ovens of Bergen Belsen , Dachau Auschwitz and Treblinka.. More ; I can not imagine why he says nothing about liberal intellectuals moving on to Kosovo, Rwanda and Darfur. Where to next?

Who knows maybe he is silent for reasons of his own.

Seems to prove that "intellectual" and "conservative" are mutually exclusive terms. Most of the time.

.Right-on Mr. T. Intellectuals/ liberals can not be educated. The Inquisition tried, Stalin tried, Mao, Kim the First and Kim the Second kindly offered reeducation camps. Vain efforts. In the end they had to kill them. Ludovic Mirabel

The regimes of Lenin, Stalin, Mao, and all those others were made possible by intellectuals.

Had you read Oliver, and had you had the command of the language in which he writes here, you would understand that in an early paragraph he makes clear that in using the term "intellectual" he is referring not to the proper use of the word but the people accepted as intellectuals by the establoishment then totally, and today still primarily, in control of the dolleges in the United States. For, as he says, if the word is used in its correct and proper sense, as he quotes Ayn Rand as correctly stating, we _have_ no intellectuals-or had none then, to speak of.

And still don't.

Were Dr. Oliver still alive, he could explain this to you much better than I, for Dr. Oliver had not only what I concede to be a better grasp of the English language than I, but also spoke French, Spanish, Dutch, German and perhaps enough Russian as well, to better convey the concepts you are not picking up on. Unfortunately, I don't speak Latin, French, Esperanto, or any other obsolete language and so cannot. Oliver read eleven languages, of which some are no longer spoken.

But what of audiophiles?

Reply to
Bret Ludwig

Its a maybe for the a'philes.

Often they are so one eyed that education, tolerance, open-mindedness which is so necessary for a full education is impossible, and the a'phile is stuck in a groove of neurotic narrow obsessions, like a duck that wants to splash around in his own little muddy puddle all day and who doesn't feel ok about flight and bigger ponds. In nature, such a duck won't survive or breed easily, so his genes are bred out, but modern human existance is so bounteous that ppl with slightly crazy tendencies flourish and even enhance all of our lives handsomely.

The a'phools we know are fools just like all the other kinds of fools. They like to think they know something but don't, and often when you listen to the gear they use and their favourite music, you wonder about their powers of perception, logic, and choices.

At a party last night, people played a real piano, a guy played jazz on a trumpet, and another young fella even played the bagpipes. Then his girlfriend sang a very difficult aria, accompanied by another piano.

If only I could get recordings to sound as fresh as the real thing!!!

But methinks they compress everything that is recorded, so it all SNAFU, and one wonders what are limits to performance.

The owner of the house likes his old NAD amp more than his Yamaha which just blew up, and wonders if tubes would do it better. He's not an audiophile or audiophool, but has good ears and is very musical ( when he's sober or even half way sober ).

I told him if he wanted bagpipes and a grand to sound real, even when played hard, ( and bagpipes can't really played softly ) then he needed speakers with more authority and all the amp watts he could lay his hands on. "Would 3 grand get me anything like this?" he asked, out of earshot of his wife.... "No", I said quietly, "but anyway, I'll have the Yamaha fixed in a fortnight..."

The full education is said to have occurred when you get people to perceive what they really like to hear. A mis-spent education is where they spend 10 grand and don't like the sound. Sometimes you have to first persuade them to part with a lot of money, and of course people have such a scarcity of funds for what they love.

Nietzsche said the same thing over 100 years ago, and Spinoza implied it in his writings, as did Aristotle. The stupid people vastly outnumber the smart people. Of course, clever people (a category that does not necessarily include smart people) know how to manipulate stupid people, and so clever people rule the world.
