During the Texas Tower shooting, for example, there were citizens who left the scene to retrieve their own rifle and then came back to return fire on the shooter. And the two officers who eventually managed to get into the Tower and take him out were accompanied by a civilian 'volunteer' providing backup.

I mention that example because in both cases the 'people' in question put themselves in harm's way for the defense of others.
