Hi Jan, My guess is it's fine as long as you keep it at room temperature. If you put it in a shack in the desert sun, then you might worry.

There's a rubidium discharge lamp in there ande it will be set to run something near 120C. Then there is the sample/absorption cell and it will be set to run something near 50C. So the whole thing has to run hot. If you put a big heatsink on it you are just asking for it to use more power... warming up the heat sink as well as more of the room air.

(The high temperatures are used to increase the vapor pressure of the Rb.)

Not much help except for those in the U.S. But I look thru the local recy cling yard every once in a while. And sometimes they have heat sinks. So if anyone neads a heatsink or two, let me know. They charge a dollar a lb for aluminum and then there would be some postage from near Philly......... ...

The last time I was there they had a few heatsinks that could be 3 kg or so . They were about 18 inches long, 6 inches wide and maybe 8 inches high. They were from some power line cabinet and had some right smart size SCR's attached to them.

Yes. We need more of that. Spreadsheets, math programs, Clib, calculators, etc, etc. Anything accepting numbers as input should be able to understand it. It's quite natural, I think. You too pronounce $1.20 as "one dollar twenty", don't you?

My son wrote me a utility that allows HSpice-style binning in PSpice, and cleanses scripts that might otherwise confuse other tools, such as in layout. He could probably fix that utility to absorb 1K7 style syntax, but I see no value in my business, since every transfer is done via files, not via eye. ...Jim Thompson

The 4k7 thing looks like amateur audio stuff to me. Nobody serious would use 7j3 for energy, or 4km8 (or would that be 4m8k?) for distance, or 273k15 for temperature.

While getting my hair cut last Saturday, I started talking to an ex-military, ex-airline pilot in the next chair, who is in engineering school now. She is taking a mandatory engineering drafting course, and they are working with pencils on paper, learning how to draw and letter and make title blocks and stuff. I thought that was great. I still draw my schematics with pencil on vellum. I did recently get one first-article amplifier with 100M resistors installed instead of 100m... nine orders of magnitude off. Somebody went to a lot of trouble to purchase a bunch of 100M 2512 resistors, so now I guess I'll have to use them for something.
