power cable model

Hi i want to model the power supply cable of length 1-2m length. The cables can be twistes or come in parallel. I prefer doing a simple lumped circuit model. Is there any reference suggesting the methods to model and how to measure the parameters experimentally? thanks kristo


Hello Kristo,

For modeling your supply cable, you should know the geometry and the frequency band.

When the geometry of your supply cable is a parallel pair with plastic insulation, or coaxial structure, you can consider it as a transmission line. Typical impedances are around 120 Ohms (for parallel wire), with 0.8 velocity factor (with respect to speed of light).

From here, based on the velocity factor and characteristic impedance, you can calculate the inductance/m and capacitance/m. Depending on the highest frequency of interest, you can convert the distributed components to lumped series inductors and parallel capacitors. Choose your inductance so that the "length" of one segment is below

0.15lambda.

You may add losses by calculating the skin depth and resistance/m for the frequency of interest.

Keep in mind that you may also have to model the premisis wiring back to the service entrance and the utility side wiring with some sort of infinite bus plus lumped impedance model. (Something the audiophools with their pricey power cords seem to forget about).
