Ping Pimpom Re: Mustard oil

A coworker talked up the virtues of mustard oil to me recently. I checked Wikipedia and it seems to be somewhat common in your part of the world. I thought that i might learn something from you, so i ask.

What do you think of its various uses?

I'm afraid I'm not the right person to ask. Although I'm in India, I'm a member of one of the numerous minority races in the country who have little in common with the rest of Indian society and culture. We have our own state in a hilly remote corner of the country. Mainstream Indians have many traditional health practices and doctrines, many of which are probably of good value, but they are also mixed with superstition and quackery.

We do use mustard oil extensively for cooking here, but mainly because it used to be the most widely available one rather than because of any perceived health benefits. The current favourite here seems to be soyabean oil, partly because it has less of the unpleasant 'raw' taste that mustard oil has if it's not adequately pre-heated.

Anyway, I'll see if I can find out more.

Just a word of caution. Mustard oil allergy is fairly common and, in the UK, mustard must be declared as an allergen on the packaging of any food that contains it.

I am allergic to even the slightest trace; the symptoms of a full-blown migraine begin 24 hours after ingestion and last for a further 24 hours. Because of this I am aware that it is a contaminant in all sorts of products, often at such low levels that the manufacturers aren't aware of it and don't declare it. This is something which you really don't wnat to experience and which makes choosing food a very unpleasant lottery on a daily basis.

I spent many years trying to find out what was causing my symptoms and, by the time I discovered the cause, I had become highly sensitised through continual exposure to it. If you start to experience symptoms of an allergy, stop using it immediately and make every effort to avoid it in future.
