OT: What I do when I'm working

Well, the current consulting gig is mechanical, but I still like electronics! :-)

Anyway, today the PHB had me draw this up and dimension it so that the shop can build it:

And here's a shaded model view - yes, folks, I play with virtual blocks in 3-D. :-)

Wow! Rich, that looks exactly like a drafting class assignment I had in high school back in '57. I guess those gadgets were finally recognized for what they were and became valuable ;-).

Will the bolt heads clear? I am making a lot of assumptions here.

Even if they'll clear, they're too close, the tool will scrape.

Hmmm. Where's the problem? I've seen several other dead links today too, so maybe some net issue.

Carve it in wood and I'll run you off a few hundred copies in zinc or aluminum or bronze...

I assume you're referring to my sig- Dilbert, when it was an animated series. I didn't record it, I downloaded it from somewhere... And thanks.

Wow, didnt know Dilbert had been animated, but then I just found out that I wrote the lyrics to one of my favorite "oldie" songs, Sitting on the dock of the bay, by Otis Redding

Hmm - now that you mention it, there's a definite possibility that they won't - but I don't have that info - the PHB just had me redraw the customer's rough sketch. It has to fit into an airplane, so one way or another someone in the sign-off chain will notice if something doesn't fit, and then they'll probably come to me to fix it. :-)

That'll work too. Give me dimensioned drawings and I can cut it on my *hot* electric foam cutter. ;-)

They may miss it, get the non-functional part later, and be pissed. Better to bring it up now.

The AutoCad checks for such interference issues against dimensions and complicated tolerances, if you know how to use it that is.

20 years or so ago I made a hot wire bender for plexiglass. But I spring-mounted the wire to keep it straight as it heated up.

Yeah, I noticed that early on. I put a coiled bit of coathanger on that thing for a spring, works a lot better, though that also shortens the capacity.

Mine was rather fancy, but I had the advantage of GenRad's machine shop...

Bakelite base with a slot for the Nichrome wire so that no contact could be made with the plexiglass.

Spring on one end spot-welded to the Nichrome to maintain linearity during heat stretching.

Also spot welded to each end of the Nichrome were copper wires supplying the current... thus no current in the spring.
