I use google groups to access this fine forum. And I just noticed my email address appears anytime my posts are responded to. But everyone else here seems to have figured out how to automatically edit their email address, a dding "no spam" or something in the name. How do you do it?

haha. yeah, I was expecting a response like this. I will "look into it"
You can get a free account with Eternal September and/or AOIE. I actually use both, plus Supernews, in the same client, because they don't all get wedged in quite the same way. Also Supernews has 18 years or so of history, not that far off from the Deja News database that Google bought out. TB is pretty easy to set up.
Other folks like Forte Agent and even the classic text based things such as tin.
One word to the wise--don't use the same client for mail and news, or you'll wind up posting some personal message here by mistake.
On Qubes OS, I use TB for both, but in different VMs so they don't get mixed up.

Tell google that that's your "reply to" e-mail address?
What actually appears in responses to my posts is " " bu t I do access google groups through my IEEE identity, and the IEEE has been spam blocking there since 1996 at least.

I created an account just for GG with "deletethisbit" in the name. Few eve r do and every once in a while someone sends me a direct mail to this stupi d account, so I have to check it periodically. On the other hand, it gets very little spam!

That's just how Google displays it, your full email address appears in the usenet post.
Jasen.
Those are excellent recommendations, including the caveat about using the same newsreader for mail and news.
I also used free accounts with Eternal September, AIOE and Albasani until I switched to a paid account with Tweaknews two years ago. The difference is that paid services are generally faster and more reliable than the free ones and have longer retention times.
Tweaknews has several plans. I opted for a block plan instead of a monthly subscription, which means that a user pays for a block of data that doesn't expire until it's used up. I paid 2 euros for a 10GB block and have hardly made a dent in 2 years.
Most mail clients can handle Usenet you just need to find a free server that offers the groups you want to subscribe to. AIOE is the one I use - it sometimes idiosyncratically bans posting to certain groups prone to flame wars but apart from that it is fine for low traffic postings.
It affected me once when uk.rec.gardening was on the banned list.
You get a 24 hour ban if you post more than a certain number of posts in a day I forget how many perhaps 50.

For more details. You can pay for access to more complete and permissive news servers but for text only and for free this one is hard to beat.

It's not that hard.
Just type anything you want in your *Reply-to-Address* in the NEWS settings.

Are you using Google Groups? I've not found that setting. Can you show me where it is?
