OT: Skype issue

Possibly. Does anyone know where to get the old version 5? I really don't want to download from some shady 3rd party web site.

I don't think so, but I'll have to go on a hunt for an older version then.

I can E-mail those to you, if you want. ...Jim Thompson

Yes, that would be great! Just the version you have would do, because it works on your PC which I believe is also XP. Use my email you have, or click "Reply-to" here, both work.

I just emailed Skype about where to get older versions, because they won't let me post in support forums either.

With software it is generally like with red wine, older is better.

Something is odd. I just clicked "Check for Updates" and it says I have the latest... and I have version 5.10.0.116.

You must have the worm version... you know, the version that sends all your designs to the competition >:-} ...Jim Thompson

The designs are not on the machine :-)

6.0.0.120 is the newest. This was just corroborted by Skype support via email. They pointed me to this site that has all the versions from newest back to the one the Pilgirms brought over:

What I don't know is whether this download site is safe.

Ehh... How about looking at the error report and posting it? Probably a memory exception error. Any other programs crashing suddenly?

Still, it's not P2P anymore. M$FT has centralized it to their servers when they bought it. Big Brother is listening!

Well, you can never be truely 'safe', but if anecdotes are any help, I've used that site before. Believe I was downgrading from Acrobat Reader 8 (new crap) to v.5 (somewhat more stable, doesn't support new PDFs). That was before I discovered Foxit (haven't seen it crash yet, supports new PDFs), of course. :)

Yup, I also use Foxit. It does have two downside, doesn't render quite as well and also doesn't allow PDF thumbnails in directories (that was is a major shortcoming).

But ... it doesn't crash much and that's key. My tolerance level for poorly written or notoriously crashing software is very low.

True, I've noticed it seems to make Computer Modern look bold on every other page. Antialiasing error?

I've never had thumbnail PDFs so I can't complain :)

The conference calling service uses google access

I've already got an account there, so I was 'supposed' to be listed as part of this conference call, but google says that my dial upis too slow and won't list me. Although I can call the participants individually using skype and it works better than I expected. I expected gaps and breaks and multiple sentences, repeating and repeating, but not really. Just speak clearly and run your words together and it works fine.
