OT: Skype issue

The amount of problems Joerg describe often point to hardware problems.

You can break it with software too, but you have to work at it. Default installations of everything with minor tweaks won't do it.

I've got Skype running on about half a dozen devices, never a problem that I can recall with the program itself (the connections are not always usable, and less so for video connections, but that's another story). Everything from a cute little iPod touch to a manly i7 Win7 machine, and through multiple updates (In general, I usually don't update automatically, just in case it breaks something I'd rather pick the time and place of failure- Firefox has been breaking things fairly regularly with updates these days).

It even plays nicely with stealth VPN functions allowing me to tunnel through the robust national firewalls in certain countries.

Absolutamente not and myriad posts about the same issue on the web evidence that. Even from our midst issues have been reported:

Quote: "FWIW, my Skype is version 4.1.0.136 and it too was affected when their network went down. I usually don't upgrade any software until I absolutely must. Reason: I've been screwed over by "new and improved" "features" too many times!

Often, the upgrade has more bugs than were supposedly found and fixed in the prior versions."

Haven't tried with this SW but other SW problems manifested themselves on machines of at least three different mfg. They were also corroborated by others, including people on this NG. Orcad crashes anyone? So HW problem can be pretty much excluded.

Some software is of astoundingly poor quality. Some I've encountered in my professional life where I was "Mr.Crash-it". No joke, once a machine sat there with a blue-screen. A guy came along. "What happened? I've never seen that!" ... "Oh, this one has just been joerged".

It wasn't our guys but 3rd party SW. So we improved that until you could literally rock the breaker in the panel like crazy and the machine would always come back correctly.

Including 6.0.0.120?

It's different in my case. I have to see machine parts live and while in chat. The non-paid overhead time is only time like this, when I have to find a way around SW bugs.

I think that's close to what happens, considering that DEP had come on intitially. DEP is rather serious.

Hence my question here. It would be good to know what the "last known good" version of this Skype SW was, and where to get it safely. Cadsoft keeps their old versions available almost back to the days of Methusaleh but I haven't found that on the Skype site.

I updated twice this year so should be ok then but .NET in itself is rather screwed up. On various occasions I had a message pop up that the .NET version was "too new" for this SW to run. So I had to install older ones over the new. Crazy.

Like I say, I get automatic updates... not fully automatic, Skype asks.

I don't recognize that version number. It was probably put out by a virus writer >:-}

Like Spehro, I've had zero problems. ...Jim Thompson

I have the SAME version and just got it for the WinXP [ptui!, curse be gone!] in October to join in conference calling. Skype works after a fashion using dial up, just requires patience. But we tested it, had few drop outs, so went on to sign up for the conference calls through the required google access, well google, in the all pervasive intelligence, said dial up is too slow and won't even let me connect! with skype. It probably wouldn't be too slow if google didn't hog all the bandwidth for ???

You don't know mpm? I thought you once wrote "I live here" (as in "on s.e.design").

Au contraire. The Internet is usually one of the fastest ways to find a solution, for just about anything. I just had to upholster the office chair I am sitting on right now. Had forgotten how to do round corners because the last time I did that was almost 15 years ago. 2-3 minutes on the web ... tada! Done.

Right. One computer per program. Great idea.

I've stuck to version 4.2.0.187 for my computers. Many consider this to be the last "good" version of Skype. It doesn't have ads popping up and works well. I installed the newest version as of a week ago on some other computers and it appears to work well except for all the pop-up ads and shifting desktop to display their pay services.

It requires Google access? Didn't say that when installing. I don't even use Google as a search engine. Do you remember what sort of access?

If you really would have automatic updates you would have rcognized that number:

This is from an admin at Skype, and 6.0.0.120 is the version they are distributing right now.

Hi, Joerg -

FWIW, I am running Win 7 with Skype version 5.10.0.16 and have had no problems.

I wonder if there are different versions for different OSs.

Cheers, John

That's interesting. I loaded Skype and asked for an update ( I have version 5.10.0.116) and Skype said I have the latest version. Makes me wonder if your version is a test version.

Well, good luck.

Cheers, John
